Greenwich Academy turns back Taft, 1-0 in NEPSAC field hockey action

A fourth quarter goal by Georgia Schmitz lifted the Greenwich Academy field hockey team to a hard-fought 1-0 win over host Taft School in an NEPSAC matchup today in Watertown.

With their third straight victory, the Gators upped their record to 6-2. Schmitz, a freshman midfielder, scored off a rebound off a shot by junior forward/midfielder Caroline Busler, giving Greenwich Academy a 1-0 lead in the fourth quarter.

“Taft was very strong, very fast and very skilled,” Greenwich Academy coach Jamie Brower said. “It was a pretty even game.”

Senior goalie Ellie Volpe recorded four saves to help lead GA to the road victory.

“They were a very strong team and I’m really proud of our girls or persevering and getting gritty on the field,” Brower said.

Greenwich Academy is right back in action tomorrow against NEPSAC opponent Kent School. GA hosts Kent at 2:30 p.m.
