Greenwich High girls volleyball team topped Shelton in Class LL tournament, Cardinals playing Darien in quarterfinals

Carrying the momentum throughout, Greenwich High School’s girls volleyball team topped Shelton in the Round of 16 of the CIAC Class LL quarterfinals, earning another match against rival Darien.

The ninth-seeded Cardinals posted a 3-0 win over eighth-seeded host Shelton on Thursday, winning the matchup by set scores of 25-14, 25-16, 26-24.

Senior outsider hitter Katherine Ford registered 12 kills and eight digs to pace the Cardinals’ offense.

Senior setter Lucia Spanjol tallied 21 assists, five digs, two aces and one block, while senior Izzy Erceg posted six aces for Greenwich (19-5). Hayley Dionis, a junior libero, notched 10 digs and two aces for the Cardinals, who defeated South Windsor in the tournament’s opening round, 3-1.

Greenwich visits top-seeded and undefeated Darien (22-0) in today’s Class LL semifinals at 3 p.m. The Blue Wave are 2-0 against the Cardinals so far this season, posting victories on Oct. 12 and Nov. 3. The previous matchup occurred in the FCIAC semifinals.
