
Brunswick School’s wrestling team opened its season in impressive fashion on Saturday at the Rhino Rumble, winning eight of the 12 weight class titles in which it entered a wrestler.
While there was no team score at this event, Brunswick had the most weight class champions and the most wins of the schools at the tournament, which included Avon Old Farms School, Belmont Hill School, Hopkins School, Hotchkiss School, Salisbury, and Taft School, which was the host team.
Ethan Phelps, a freshman, won the 126-pound weight class at Saturday’s Rhino Rumble at Taft, registering a record 4-0 for the Bruins. Michael Accetta, a junior, was the 132-pound champion for Brunswick, going 2-0.
In the 138-pound division at the tournament, senior Enzo Vera was 3-0 to capture the title. Bruins junior Asher Benn won all three of his matches at the tournament to claim the 144-pound championship, while teammate Jack Degl, a sophomore, finished 3-0 for the 150-pound title.
Freshman Carlo Tucci (157-pound, 2-0) and senior co-captain William MacGillivray, (165-pound class, 3-0) won their respective weight class championships for the Bruins at the tourney. Emil Sogaard-Srikrishnan, a Bruins sophomore, was the 174-pound winner.
The Bruins also had a group of place winners at the Rhino Rumble. Sophomore Christian Yanoti (sophomore, 2-2, fourth place, 106), Quinn McGraw (freshman, 3-1, 120), freshman Alec Harned (150, 2-2, fourth place) and junior Whip Gorman (2-2, 157-pound, second place) were among the Bruins place winners at the season-opening Rhino Rumble.
Brunswick will host Avon Old Farms in a dual meet on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at the Ostrye Wrestling Gymnasium at Brunswick.
