Sacred Heart Greenwich’s swim/diving team placed fifth at National Catholic Championships, held in Maryland

Competing on the national level, the Sacred Heart Greenwich swimming team showed that it was up to the challenge, producing an outstanding performance at National Catholic Championships at Loyola University in Maryland, recently.

Sacred Heart placed an impressive fifth in the team standings out of of 27 teams at the competitive meet, held at Loyola University. The highest place the Tigers previously finished at the National Catholic Championships was 12th place in 2020.

Tigers coach Keegan Drew noted that almost everyone on the team had a season, or personal-best time and three team records were set.

In the 200-yard freestyle, Alexandra Bastone rebroke her old record, posting a time of 1:52.20 at the National Catholic Championships. Sacred Heart established a new school record in the 200 freestyle relay, breaking the previous mark set in 2018.

Jane Cary, Emma Robredo, Victoria Mordaunt and Bastone combined to set the Sacred Heart record in the 200 freestyle relay at the National Catholic Championships with a time of 1:41.01.

In the 400 freestyle relay at the meet, Cary, Robredo, Lauren McCauley and Bastone broke a team record that stood since 2010, registering a time of 3:41.57 in the event. They smashed the previous 2010 record by three seconds. McCauley finished 15th in the 200 individual medley and 11th in the 100 butterfly at the National Catholic Championships in Maryland. Mordaunt placed seventh in the 50 freestyle and eight in the 100 butterfly, while Cary came in 13th in the 100 freestyle for the Tigers.

Also at the National Catholic Championships, Bastone was a strong second in the 200 freestyle and earned a second-place finish in the 500 freestyle as well. The Tigers’ 200 medley relay team of came in 10th place (Cary, Mordaunt, McCauley, Bastone), while Cary, Emma Robredo, Mordaunt and Bastone combined for a fourth-place showing in the 200 freestyle relay.

The 400 freestyle relay squad of Cary, Emma Robredo, McCauley and Bastone were seventh at the championship meet. In diving action at the National Catholic Championships, Sacred Heart received a third-place finish from Kate O’Brien, a seventh-place finish from Victoria Zacco, a 12th-place finish from Molly Parker and a 16th-place effort from Katy Davitte.
