Greenwich High girls ice hockey team edged by Stamford/Westhill/Staples, 2-1

A two-goal first period lifted the Stamford-Westhill-Staples co-op girls hockey team to a 2-1 win over Greenwich at Terry Conners Ice Rink in Stamford in an FCIAC game held on Wednesday.

The loss was the third straight for the Cardinals (4-7), who have been edged in three one-goal games so far this season. Greenwich also dropped one-goal decisions to Guilford co-op and Hall/Conard.

Senior goalie Emma Kunschner made 25 saves in goal for the Cardinals. Peyton Jelinek, a senior, scored a goal and senior linemate Sophie Roth had the assist for Greenwich.

Stamford/Westhill/Staples went ahead 1-0 on Kimberly Boyd’s goal with 9:36 remaining in the first period. The victors took a 2-0 lead when Ella Pearle scored at the 4:11 mark of the opening period.

Jelinek tallied early in the second period off an assist from Sophie Roth, bringing the Cards to within 2-1. With GHS on a power play, Roth passed the puck to Jelinek, who was positioned close to the net for the goal.

Stamford/Westhill/Staples held on to its one-goal lead for the win. Up next for Greenwich is a game against rival Darien Saturday at Dorothy Hamill Skating Rink at 5:30 p.m.
