Greenwich High girls hockey team topped by Avon Co-op in regular season finale

The Greenwich High School girls ice hockey team was tied with the visiting Avon Co-op team after two periods of play at Dorothy Hamill Skating Rink, but the visitors scored the game’s final three goals and skated to a 5-2 victory in a non-conference game.

Senior captain/forward Sophie Roth, the Cardinals’ leading goal-scorer this season, scored two goals to pace the team. Sophomore forward Aubrey Roth and sophomore defender Lexi Carino each had one assist for Greenwich, which plays again Wednesday in the FCIAC Tournament semifinals against Darien.

The Cardinals (4-3 FCIAC record) are seeded fourth in the FCIAC Tournament, while the Blue Wave are seeded first with a 7-0 league mark, heading into Wednesday’s 6 p.m. semifinals.

Sophie Roth gave Greenwich a 1-0 lead on Avon Co-op by scoring with 13:01 in the first period. Bella Bonfiglio tied the score at 1-1 for Avon Co-op scoring at the 11:58 mark of the opening period off an assist from Nicole Partridge.

With 9:49 left in the first period, Sophie Roth tallied off assists from Aubrey Roth and Carino, giving the Cardinals a 2-1 edge. Partridge’s goal off an assist from Isabela Schiano knotted the score at 2-2 at the 4:47 mark of the opening period, then the visitors tallied two unanswered goals in the second period and one in the third to claim the win.

Senior goalie Emma Kunschner made 35 saves for the Cardinals, who finished in fourth place in the FCIAC standings.
