
After producing an impressive second-place finish in the team standings at the CIAC Class LL Championships, the Greenwich High School boys indoor track and field team experienced the same type of success for the third straight time at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven, this time, at the State Open Championships.
Behind a winning effort from Gianluca Bianchi in the 300-meter run and fast times in the relay events, the Cardinals placed second out of 40 teams at the State Open Indoor Track and Field Championships, this past Saturday in New Haven. The Cardinals finished with a team score of 30 points in the 40-team meet, followed by third-place Xavier (29), Ridgefield (28) and Stonington (22). Hall won the State Open team championship, amassing 66 points.
Bianchi, a senior, captured the gold medal in the 300-meter dash, winning the race in 34.89 seconds. Samuel Sandler of Hall was the runner-up in 35.00 seconds, while Noah Colangelo of Killingly finished third (35.21). Bianchi’s first-place finish gave Greenwich 10 team points.
In the 4 x 400-meter relay finals at the State Open, sophomore Cameron Williams, junior Antonio Ciccarelli, Bianchi and junior Harrison Goldenberg combined for a second-place showing for Greenwich with a time of 3:27.04. Hall claimed the 4 x 400-meter State Open title (3:24.88).
The 4 x 200 meter relay saw the Cardinals’ place third, with sophomore Caleb You, Bianchi, Williams and Goldenberg combining for a time of 1:33.42. Windsor was the 4 x 200-meter relay winner (1:32.22).
You, sophomore Kaiser Ilker, Williams and Ciccarelli were fourth for the Cardinals in the 1600-meter sprint medley relay race (3:40.83). Ridgefield was the winner, clocking in at 3:37.35. Junior Christian Zawislack finished 11th in the 3200-meter run, posting a time of 9:47.73. Freshman Matteo Chiesara, freshman Ryan Newcomb, senior Wyatt Abernethy and Aidan Fay were 12th in the 4 x 800-meter event for the Cards, clocking in at 1:32.22.
