Greenwich High School’s boys lacrosse team earned its first win of the season on Tuesday against Bronxvile and it worked overtime to do so.
Sophomore Colin Zeller, a sophomore midfielder, scored in triple overtime, lifting Greenwich to an 8-7 come-from-behind win over host Bronxville (N.Y.) in an early-season non-conference game.
Mikey Brescia, a sophomore attack, assisted on Zeller’s game-winning goal.
“Colin Zeller, assisted by Mikey Brescia, had a great step-down shot on the UNC-bound (North Carolina) Bronxville goalie for the win,” Greenwich coach Bobby Lutz said.
Brescia recorded a hat trick and posted three assists to pace the Cardinals’ offense. Zeller registered two goals and one assist, while senior attack Brian Collins had one goal and one assist for the Cardinals (1-1).
Junior midfielder Jimmy Flynn added a goal for Greenwich, which received an outstanding performance from junior Lane Critchell at the faceoff-X.
Critchell won 18 of the 21 faceoffs he took, enabling the Cardinals to gain key possessions and control the ball against Bronxville.
Sophomore goalie Ilan Amaro made 11 saves for Greenwich.
“We went down 5-2 at the half, but the defense and goalie really stepped it up, including several penalty kills in overtime,” Lutz noted. “Lane Critchell dominated the faceoff X, which gave us the opening possession in overtime.”
Greenwich plays its home-opener Saturday against Weston at 12 p.m. The Cardinals will then host Stamford on April 11 at 4:30 p.m. and Wilton on April 15 at 2 p.m.
