Sacred Heart Greenwich’s Varsity A team uses balanced scoring effort to edge lacrosse foe Oak Knoll School

Eight games into its season, the Sacred Heart Greenwich Varsity A lacrosse team sports a sparkling record of 7-1 and much to its delight, seems to be improving each and every matchup.

The Tigers have not only won their games by convincing scores, they have also shown the ability to pull out close wins against formidable foes.

Their lastest close encounter came this past Saturday, when Oak Knoll School of the Holy Child visited Sacred Heart Greenwich’s campus.

Sacred Heart ran its record to 7-1 with a well-earned 9-7 victory over Oak Knoll School. The Tigers, who are among the top-25 ranked high school girls lacrosse teams nationally, received goals and/or assists from eight different players on their way to the home win.

Junior midfielder Payton Sfreddo paced the way for SHG, recording a hat trick.

“The girls played well against a very competitive Oak Knoll team,” SHG coach Sharon Robinson said. “Oak Knoll is a very strong program and they rallied back to tie the game at 7, before we pulled away.”

Senior attack Kelly Haggerty registered two goals and one assist, while junior midfielder Maggie Bacigalupo tallied twice for the victors.

“The girls are learning more each game and excited to be 7-1 at this point of the season,” coach Robinson noted.

Senior attack Karina Sethi scored one goal, as did junior midfielder Kaitlin Robinson for the Tigers, who were coming off a resounding 18-0 road triumph against Westminster School.

Junior attack Wowie Walker and sophomore midfielder Wowie Walker each assisted on a goal in the winning effort.

Senior Laura O’Connor earned another win in goal for the Tigers. O’Connor made four saves in the victory. The game was also Sacred Heart’s One Love game.

Sacred Heart raised awareness for the One Love Foundation – a national non-profit organization with the goal of ending relationship abuse. The One Love Foundation empowers young people with the tools and resources they need to see the signs of healthy and unhealthy relationships and bring life-saving prevention education to their communities.

“They were excited to raise awareness for One Love through this game too, wearing their tees and stating what One Love means to them,” Sharon Robinson said.

Sacred Heart has a home game against Hill Academy on Thursday with an early starting time of 2:30 p.m. They will then visit Sacred Heart Academy in Hempstead, N.Y., on Saturday for an 11 a.m. matchup

Sacred Heart Greenwich’s lacrosse team is in the midst of another highly successful season.
