
After sweeping Ridgefield in the first round of the CIAC Girls Volleyball Tournament, Greenwich High School produced another sensational performance in the second round against Newtown.
Seeded 11th, Greenwich defeated sixth-seeded Newtown, 3-1, in the Round of 16 of the CIAC Class LL Tournament on Thursday at Newtown. The impressive win earned the Cardinals a spot in today’s 6 p.m. Class LL quarterfinals at third-seeded Southington.
In Thursday’s state tournament Round of 16 match, Greenwich lost the first set to Newtown, 25-21, but won the next three, 25-14, 25-14, 25-16, to advance to today’s quarterfinals.

Senior Kassidy Bonney bolstered the Cardinals offense. Bonney posted a team-high 20 kills and tallied 14 digs, three aces and two blocks to pace the Cardinals.
Junior Alina Sarkissian also propelled Greenwich in the hitting department, registering 15 kills, six digs, five blocks and two aces against the Nighthawks.

Setter Sarah Bernann sparked Greenwich’s offense as well, notching a team-best 44 assists, to go along with five digs, four aces and one kill. Junior Joy Houdre had 16 digs, four kills and three aces, while senior libero Hayley Dionis led the Cards’ defensively, recording a team-high 20 digs to go along with one assist.

Skylar Wilson, a senior, added to Greenwich’s strong defensive effort, posting 11 digs.
If Greenwich defeats Southington, it plays the Amity/Glastonbury winner in Wednesday’s Class LL semifinals.
