Brunswick wrestling team places third at Bearcat Brawl tournament at Hotchkiss; Bruins dominate Marvelwood in dual meet at home

Brunswick School’s wrestling team made its mark at the 14-team Bearcat Brawl hosted by Hotchkiss School on Dec. 7, finishing in third place in the team standings behind numerous standout performances.

Northfield Mount Hermon won the team title at the Bearcat Brawl, posting a team score of 313 points. Belmont Hill School placed second (214.5 points) and Brunswick took third (191.5 points). New York Military Academy (188.5) and Trinity-Pawling School (145) were fourth and fifth, respectively, in the team standings.

The Bruins were boosted by a number of place-winners at Hotchkiss’ Bearcat Brawl. Eighth grader Paul Kesmodal finished second in the 106-pound division for the Bruins, while teammate Alec Harned, a junior, was second in the 157-pound division.

Jack Degl (165-pound weight class), a junior finished in second place in his division for Brunswick. Owen Bartoszek, a sophomore, placed third in the 126-pound bracket, as did Brunswick teammate Patrick O’Donahue (senior) in the 132-pound bracket.

Junior Michael Marini had a fourth-place finish in the 285-pound class and teammate Declan Murray (285) a senior, took fifth. Nikki Krause, a junior, posted a fifth-place finish in the 215-pound bracket and junior Christian Yanoti (120) also finished fifth. Additionally, sophomore Trevor Devine (157-pound class), Emil Sogaard-Srikrishnan (senior, 175) and junior Jake Greene (190) each registered two wins for Brunswick in the tournament.

On Dec. 11, the Bruins hosted Marvelwood and were dominant on their way to rolling to an 81-0 victory. Sophomore Judah Viders won a 9-4 decision for the Bruins in the 132-pound match. Yanoti, junior Quinn McGraw, Degal, Sogaard-Srikrishnan and senior Will O’Reilly won their respective matches by pinfall for the Bruins (1-1 record on the season).

Brunswick will compete at the Avon Duals on Saturday (Dec. 14). Then after the Holiday break, the Bruins will get back in action when they host Greenwich Country Day School on Jan. 8.

Brunswick has a storied wrestling program. Legendary head varsity wrestling coach Tim Ostrye currently stands as the winningest coach in New England (NEPSWA) prep school wrestling history with well over 600 wins. The National Prep Wrestling board has honored Ostrye as Head Coach of the Year (2019) and with the Neil Buckley Outstanding Service Award in 2006.

Brunswick has won 35 out of the last 41 FAA league championships, including 22 straight titles from 1998-2019. The Bruins teams have also captured 15 Western New England (WNEPSWA) championships.
