Generating goals hasn’t been a problem this season for the Greenwich High School girls lacrosse team, which has produced double digit goals in all but one of their nine games so far this spring.

The Cardinals continued that trend this week, thriving offensively, while also stepping up defensively in victories against Trumbull High School and Staples.

Greenwich topped Trumbull, 15-5, on April 28 at Cardinal Stadium, then traveled to Westport for a key matchup against FCIAC rival Staples on May 1st. Flourishing offensively again, the Cardinals recorded a well-earned 14-12 victory, extending their winning streak to three games in the process. After starting the season 1-5, Greenwich now has a 4-5 mark heading into Tuesday’s home game against Westhill. In their win over Trumbull, senior Giselle DiPietro registered a team-high five goals and added one assist to spark the Cardinals and get their week off to a winning start.

“One thing we’ve improved on these last few game is adapting to what mistakes we’re making, we’ve been really coachable and I think that our in-game adjustments are good,” Giselle DiPietro said after the Cards’ home win over Trumbull.

Senior attack Dillon McFerran also ignited Greenwich’s offense, tallying four goals to go along with three assists versus the Eagles of Trumbull. McFerran had a great all-around game, scooping up four ground balls in the win.

“We did a really good job of being patient and executing our draws as well,” McFerran said of the team’s triumph over Trumbull. “Also, we were moving the ball and noticing when we were being double teamed. So, I think overall, we were patient and had good ball movement and our ride was super good.”

Senior Sophia DiPietro, Giselle’s twin sister, added to Greenwich’s offensive attack, notching one goal and one assist in the winning effort against visiting Trumbull.

During the course of their three-game winning streak, the Cardinals have scored 45 goals for an average of 15 goals per game. In their losses this season, GHS has also scored its share of goals. They scored 14 goals in a close defeat to Ridgefield and 15 in the season-opening road loss to non-conference opponent Pleasantville.

Sophia DiPietro discussed the Cardinals’ offensive performance against Trumbull.

“I’m really happy with how we played offensively, we had a few instances where the goalie was really good and made a lot of saves, but on offense, we converted on the ride and made up for every mistake we made,” she said. “It shows our team’s drive to win and I’m really happy about it.”

Junior Lily Nogaki, a member of Greenwich High’s varsity girls basketball team, which won the CIAC Class LL Tournament championship in March, recorded a goal, as did senior Lindsay Messer and sophomore Claire Campinell – also a GHS varsity basketball player this past winter.

Greenwich held a 5-1 lead on Trumbull after Messar scored with 10:44 remaining in the second quarter. Giselle DiPietro made it 6-1 when she tallied at the 8:14 mark of the second quarter.

After Trumbull tallied, McFerran converted a shot, putting the Cardinals on top, 7-2 with 6:42 left in the second period. DiPietro added another goal with 4:50 to go in the second quarter, then after junior goalie Charlotte Marek made a save for GHS, Sophia DiPietro tallied.

“I think now we’re more composed and we’ve gotten to know how we work as a team and each other’s strengths and building off of that – and helping each other as well,” McFerran noted.

Said Giselle DiPietro of the team’s stellar play: “We’re starting to move the ball, we started to recognize that our drives were going to work and we implemented that right away and that resulted in our success.”

Senior Lucy Kimberly played in goal and junior Grace Campbell paced the offense for Trumbull, which has a record of 4-4 on the season. Greenwich’s defense was sound throughout their matchups against Trumbull and the key road win over Staples.

Greenwich has only given up 22 goals in its last three games and has improved defensively throughout the season.

“I give a lot of credit to our defense,” Sophia DiPietro noted. “The transition and clears are just so much better than the beginning of the season.”

Giselle DiPietro made reference to the team’s positive mindset.

“We’re a pretty positive time, we’re all really positive, we’re all very uplifting, we say rear view mirror a lot – forget the mistakes and adjust and it’s been working really well,” Giselle said.
