Greenwich High girls tennis team advances to FCIAC Tournament final with semifinal victory over New Canaan

Greenwich High School’s varsity girls tennis team moved one significant step closer to achieving a repeat.

The defending FCIAC Tournament champion Cardinals earned a return trip to the championship match, defeating visiting New Canaan, 4-2, in the FCIAC semifinals on May 22. Top-seeded Greenwich will look to win its second straight FCIAC Tournament title when it plays second-seeded rival Staples in the championship match at Wilton High School on May 26.

Greenwich enters the FCIAC tourney final with a perfect record of 17-0 and has won 43 consecutive matches dating back to the 2024 season. The Cardinals recorded a 7-0 win over Staples during the regular season and also topped the Wreckers for the CIAC Class LL State Tournament championship the past two seasons.

In the FCIAC Tournament semifinals, the Cardinals received singles victories from senior Caitlin Mahoney and junior Avery Li and doubles wins from senior Maddy Wilber and freshman Sofia Rodriguez and seniors Bella Barban and Olivia Popp.

Mahoney, who is enjoying another undefeated season, was victorious against New Canaan’s Natalia Lundberg at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-0. Li defeated Alexandra Belov of the Rams, 6-0, 6-2, at the third singles spot.

At first singles, Leah Zhang won her match for New Canaan against GHS senior Shining Sun, 6-2, 6-2. Freshman Chloe Culver of Greenwich was edged in the first set of her No. 4 singles matchup against Chloe Hoegstedt, 7-5 and won the second set, 6-4. The match was not completed since Greenwich clinched the overall semifinal-round match when it got four wins.

In doubles action, Wilber/Rodriguez were 6-4, 6-4 winners over Camryn Lee/Isabella Caleba of the Rams at the No. 1 position.

Barban/Popp showed their usual outstanding teamwork for Greenwich at No. 2 doubles, defeating Sophie Adamczyk/Lucy Bench, 6-4, 6-4.

The freshman tandem of Alexandra Rothstein and Priya Gupta were of the Cardinals were involved in a close match at third doubles when the match was stopped. Rothstein/Gupta won the first set, 6-2 and lost the second set, 3-6. A third and deciding set did not take place since GHS clinched the match, earning another berth into the finals.

Greenwich began competition in the FCIAC Tournament by downing eighth-seeded Danbury in the quarterfinals, 7-0, on May 13th.

Sun won her match in straight sets at No. 1 singles for the Cards, topping Sydney Radachowsky, 6-1, 6-3. Mahoney was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Danbury’s Emilia Schweitzer at No. 2 and Li was a straight set success versus Stephany Reyes at No. 3, 6-4, 6-1.

Greenwich’s doubles players also won their matches in straight sets. Wilber/Rodriguez earned a 6-2, 6-0 triumph at the top spot, while Barban and Popp were perfect in winning at No. 2, 6-0, 6-0.

At third doubles, Gupta and Clara Sibley were victorious, 6-0, 6-2.

Coached by Jerry Sulli, Greenwich will go for its 14th FCIAC Tournament championship when it plays Staples at New Canaan High School at 4 p.m. in the title match.
