Sleeping in isn’t an option for the enthusiastic group of runners who rise early each Memorial Day to participate in an always much-anticipated event – the Jim Fixx Memorial Day Run.
The Jim Fixx Memorial Day Run celebrated its 62nd anniversary this past Monday and a little bit of rain didn’t keep the dedicated competitors away.
One hundred twenty-eight runners finished the 3.1-mile (5K) race, which began at Greenwich Avenue and finished at Havemeyer Park and the times they registered were impressive on a chilly, rainy, Memorial Day, May 25th morning.
Lucas Grandjacques, a Greenwich High School senior and member of the Greenwich High varsity boys track and field team, which recently captured the team title at the FCIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, was the 2026 Jim Fixx Memorial Day Run overall winner with a time of 17 minutes, 58 seconds.

The challenging Jim Fixx race had the competitors run down Greenwich Avenue, Indian Harbor Drive, Davis Avenue and Bruce Park, to name just some of the areas of town in which they tested their running skills and stamina – before finishing on the track at Havemeyer Park.
“Today’s race was good,” Grandjacques said after winning the Jim Fixx Memorial Day Run. “It started out a little tough, because it was rainy. The warmup was sluggish but then we got to the start line and the energy was there.”
“The first downhill really got us pumped up,” said Grandjacques, who also competed on Greenwich’s High’s outstanding indoor track and field team this past winter. “I was running with some of the top guys for most of the race and then I caught up to second in that last mile. In the uphills, I past him and it was just a fight back down here.”
Kevin Glatstein of Pelham, N.Y., finished second overall in the Jim Fixx Memorial Day Run, also posting a time of 17:58. Grandjacques won the race in a sprint finish.

Grandjacques noted that the toughest part of the race came toward its conclusion.
“The surprise hill at the very end was a challenge,” Grandjacques said. “I didn’t do a course preview. That hill was a surprise but anything in a race can be a surprise and you push through.”
A soon-to-be student at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, Grandjacques certainly enjoyed his second appearance at the Jim Fixx Memorial Day Run.
“The course layout was great,” said Grandjacques, who also took part in the event in 2023. :Going through Bruce Park was great, the views were great the whole time. In that last uphill we had spectators cheering us on and it was really fun. At the end of my senior season it feels good to come back and race with the community.”

Cos Cob resident William Guo finished third in the Jim Fixx Memorial Day run, crossing the finish line in 18:18.
“It’s one of my favorite local running events,” said Guo, a native of Seattle, Washington, who has lived in Greenwich for six years. “I really love the community aspect. Many of the races that Greenwich puts on is really about the community. I was satisfied and I’m excited to watch my daughter run the half mile.”
Alex Price of Westport finished sixth in the race with a time of 18:30.00 and Greenwich resident Charles Miller took sixth 18:40.00. Connor O’Driscoll of White Plains, N.Y., (18:50), Hajime Agresta (Cos Cob, 18:56) and Ruthie O’Driscoll of Brooklyn, N.Y, (19:01.00) placed sixth to eighth, respectively. O’Driscoll was the overall Jim Fixx Memorial Day Run women’s champion.
“I came here with my dad, who is my running inspiration,” Ruthie O’Driscoll said. “We were really excited to run the race together. I wanted to make him proud. So, I decided to go out there and race my best.”

“The race was nice, it kind of worked in our favor,” Ruthie O’Driscoll continued. ‘It was a fast first mile on the downhill – first time competing in the event.”
She recently ran in a 26-mile marathon in Eugene, Oregon.
“This is my first shorter race in a long time, but it felt nicer than running 26 miles,” Ruthie O’Driscoll noted. “It’s a different race altogether. The rain started to lighten up a little bit after the start and honestly, it helped me. It’s better than an 85 degree day in my book.”
The women’s champion, O’Driscoll appreciated the course the Jim Fixx run offered.

“The course layout was good,” she said. “It was a really nice, fast start, punishing hill in the third mile toward the end, which made it hard as you were heading toward the finish. It really brought your heart rate up and made for a stronger finish across the track here. I’ll come back here next year, that’s for sure.”
Joel Abrahams of Greenwich was ninth (19:12) and Thomas Steinman, also from Greenwich, placed 10th (20:03) in the race. Konrad Wagner (Harrison, N.Y., 20:04), Emily Hunt (New Milford, N.J., 20:23), Matt Kmetz, Armonk, N.Y., 20:58), Julian Reisman (Old Greenwich, 20:59), Anatolie Vartosu (Stamford, 21:05), Charlotte Pastel (Greenwich, 21:26), Vlad Silagy (Greenwich, 21:30), Peter Stone (Tuckahoe, N.Y., 21:30), April Jelinek (Old Greenwich, 21:40) and Matthew Cross (New Canaan, 21:44) rounded out the top-20 overall finishers at the Jim Fixx Run.
Trophies were awarded to the top three finishers of each age group. Alex Price of Westport was the 13-19 year-old male winner (18:30) and Greenwich’s Charles Miller was the men’s 40-44 year-old champion (18:40). The following were also their respective age group winners at the Jim Fixx Memorial Day Run.

Numerous volunteers enable the Jim Fixx Memorial Day Run to take place every year. Don Mohr, Greenwich Parks and Recreation Supervisor, has been a part of the Jim Fixx Memorial Day Run for 47 years. He works tirelessly to ensure that the event is well organized and ready to be held each and every Memorial Day in town.

“This peaked around 1980 with the numbers, but it’s still a vibrant race and people have a good time,” Mohry said following another Jim Fixx race. “A lot of things have to fall together at once, a lot of moving parts, like any race.”
