Ten matches into the season, Greenwich High School’s varsity volleyball team is an absolutely perfect 10.
The defending CIAC Class LL state champion and FCIAC title-winning Cardinals have earned a record of 10-0 through their first 10 matches and have not lost a single set in the process.
That’s correct, the soaring Cardinals, coming off a 25-1 double championship 2025 season, have won all 10 of their matches by a 3-0 score.
Greenwich’s latest 3-0 victory occurred on Oct. 8th against visiting Westhill High School. Receiving standout performances from numerous athletes, Greenwich defeated a tough Westhill team by game scores of 25-15, 25-18, 25-9.
“I think going into it we knew they were going to be scrappy,” GHS tri-captain Kayah Armstrong said, following the team’s win over the Vikings. “Coach told us to look out for things like off-speed hits and things that roll off the net.”

“We definitely saw a bit of that and some of it got us, but I think we were trying really hard to stay on our toes, so we were able to combat some of that,” Armstrong continued.
Armstrong recorded nine digs, five service points, two assists and one block, while junior libero Bailee Dayon registered 20 digs, seven service points and three digs for the Cardinals (10-0). With Dayon leading the team’s defensive effort, senior tri-captain/setter Victoria Sullivan helped the offense jell.
Sullivan posted 14 assists, 15 service points, six digs and two kills for the victorious Cardinals.
“We moved pretty well, we were moving the ball around and it helped us when we had one-on-one situations and less of a strong block,” Sullivan said.

Senior tri-captain Heidi Zieme sparked the Cardinals offensively and defensively against Westhill, tallying 13 digs, seven kills and two service points. Zieme, Armstrong and Sullivan were each outstanding contributors to Greenwich’s 2025 championship season.
Each match has seen the Cards exhibit impressive execution of their game plan and consistency.
“I feel really good about our team so far,” Zieme said. “We have seven more games and I feel like we’re just constantly getting better each game. We’re working on specific things, not just playing volleyball.”

After winning the first set against Westhill, 25-15, the visitors rallied to make the second set tight. Kills by junior Samantha Tommasino gave GHS some breathing room, giving the squad leads of 20-17 and 22-18.
Tommasino displayed her powerful hitting prowess, totaling a team-high 12 kills to go along with two digs, one block and one service points for the Cards.
“I knew they had good defense, I knew they were scrappy, I told them be ready for every ball to come back over, we knew that going in,” Greenwich coach Marianna Linnehan said of her Cardinals facing Westhill.

Beatriz Lisboa Da Cunha De Freitas, one of Greenwich’s two starting freshmen, had an all-around fine match, compiling 10 digs, three kills, 15 assists and six service points in the winning effort.
Freshman Charlotte Cook has also quickly adapted to playing at the varsity level, competing well for the Cardinals.
“I think the freshmen have come onto the team and made a huge impact,” Zieme noted. “We have two freshmen starting this year, which hasn’t happened in Greenwich volleyball for a really long time. One of them is a setter, one of them is a middle hitter and we would not be where we are without them.”

Said Linnehan: “My upperclassmen did a really good job of making the freshmen feel comfortable. I know the freshmen were nervous playing with such high talent, but I think they’ve blended right in.”
Greenwich traveled to Wilton on Oct. 6 and was victorious, 3-0, winning by set scores of 25-10, 25-12, 25-19. Dayon notched 20 digs, six service points and one dig, while Sullivan had five digs, three kills, 15 service points and two assists in the win over the Warriors.
Armstrong tallied 12 kills, seven digs, six service points and four blocks, while Lisboa Da Cunha De Freitas had seven assists, three kills, three service points and one dig for the victors.
Junior Madison Eldridge (five digs, four kills, five service points, one assist) also helped the Cardinals soar past the Warriors. Greenwich hosted longtime FCIAC rival Darien on Sept. 30 and won, 3-0.

“That one was intense,” Sullivan said of Greenwich’s home win versus Darien. “We went into it knowing they had great hitters and we had to be ready for that. But they have been our rivals and we went into it with a lot of energy and really shut them down.”
Indeed, watching the Cardinals, it’s apparent they are comfortable with their roles and responsibilities on the court, which leads to impressive chemistry.
“Last year I went into it just hoping I could fill this position,” Sullivan noted. “As a setter myself, you know that you have to take that well on the floor. Being a captain outside of the team to the girls as well it’s like we’re one big family and being a leader on the team is great.”

On Sept. 28, GHS topped Norwalk, 25-17, 25-12, 25-8, on the road. Armstrong put down 15 kills to go along with 12 service points, six aces and five digs. Sullivan had 12 service points, nine assists, eight digs and five kills, while Dayon finished with 21 digs, 12 service points and three aces for the Cardinals, who once again, made it difficult for the opposition to gain momentum.
Greenwich also swept non-conference foe Joel Barlow at home on Sept. 25, 25-7, 25-14, 25-10. Sullivan (18 assists, 10 service points, four digs, two kills), Lisboa Da Cunha De Freitas (seven kills, seven assists, two service points, one dig), Dayon (20 digs, six service points, three assists), Zieme (five kills, seven digs, three service points, one assist) and senior Emma Pashkoff (12 service points, five kills, five aces and three digs) helped spark the Cardinals past Joel Barlow.

Armstrong summed up the Cardinals’ winning performance against Westhill.
“I think in the long run it’s good, because not every team is going to hit hard or defensive,” she said. “Some are going to be scrappy, so we learned to defend that today. Everyone was in sync, everyone was swinging, hitting, everybody was contributing.”

The week ahead has Greenwich visiting Bridgeport Central on Oct. 13th and hosting Staples on Oct. 14th.
