Playing a high-scoring Wilton squad tough in the opening half, Greenwich High School’s varsity field hockey team entered halftime of its matchup against the Warriors with plenty of optimism.

As the game progressed, however, the Warriors began capitalizing on more of their opportunities and when the contest concluded, the visitors earned another convincing win to their ledger.

Scoring five goals in the second half, Wilton gained its 11th victory of the season, topping host Greenwich, 7-0, at Cardinal Stadium. With the win, Wilton moved its record to 11-3. Greenwich, which lost to Darien, 3-0, on Oct. 22nd at Cardinal Stadium has a record of 8-7 on the season.

The Cardinals close out their regular season on Oct. 27th against visiting Westhill High School. Senior Liza Fogelson recorded two goals and two assists to pace the Warriors past the Cardinals in this FCIAC matchup.

Wilton entered halftime with a 2-0 lead on Greenwich, then scored three goals in the third quarter and tallied twice in the fourth quarter. The Cardinals have had the upper hand in their field hockey rivalry against the Warriors, earning close wins against their FCIAC foe the past several seasons.

Greenwich edged Wilton in a shootout in the 2025 FCIAC Tournament quarterfinals to advance to the semifinal round.

“We came out knowing they were an extremely tough opponent,” Greenwich coach Megan Wax said. “They were essentially the same team as they were last year, they didn’t graduate too many girls.”

“That was the team we went to shootouts last year, so we knew what we were up against and I was really pleased with the way that we came out in the first half,” Wax continued. “But eventually a lot of the errors that we were making caught up to us.”

Junior goalie Tatum Wunderlich faced pressure throughout for Greenwich. Wunderlich, who was kept busy throughout the game, registered 11 saves for the Cardinals, who had to defend a lot of penalty corners against the Warriors.

Wilton generated 15 penalty corners for the game and posted 16 shots on goal on their way to notching their 11th win of the season.

“Defending corners in the first half we did a great job,” Wax noted about her Cardinals. “I think they had 11 and they only scored on one of them, so that was great, but then we need to make the stronger adjustments as teams recognize the weakness and they kind of prey on it. So, we have some work to do cleaning that up defensively.”

Fogelson opened the game’s scoring, tallying with 5:51 remaining in the first quarter. She gave the Warriors a 2-0 lead when she tallied at the 1:21 mark of the second quarter.

Greenwich spent a lot of time playing defense in the first half, with Wilton drawing 11 penalty corners. Senior captain Addy Sciulla and Julia Van de Rotte, also a senior captain, helped lead Greenwich defensively, along with junior Claire Campinello and a host of others.

“I think we played super hard in our first hard, but after a few calls it definitely got frustrating for us and I think we’re still trying to better ourselves, but at the same time I just don’t think it was our day,” Sciulla said. “We’re still recovering from little things, little injuries and I think it’s like a learning experience.”

Casey O’Connor scored off an assist from Fogelson with 13:30 left in the third quarter and Georgia Dinapoli generated a goal at the 1:50 mark of the third quarter, also off a Fogelson assist, making it 4-0 in favor of the Warriors.

Amy Hagerty’s goal with 15.1 seconds to go in the third quarter, capped the Warriors’ third-quarter scoring and gave them a 5-0 advantage. Lyla Flanagan and Olivia Moroz each had a fourth-quarter goal in the winning effort.

“From this game I take away defensively, you have to stay with your girl, even if you want to help out on offense,” Sciulla noted. “With a tough team like Wilton, you just really can’t let them get away from you.”

Greenwich, which is in first place in the FCIAC West Division standings, celebrates its Senior Day against Westhill on Oct. 27th at 6:30 p.m. Then, the Cardinals will turn their attention to the FCIAC Tournament.
