Greenwich High School’s win against varsity field hockey foe Westhill High School was especially special for its seniors when it hosted the Vikings on Oct. 27th, since it was Senior Night for the Cardinals.
Playing their final home game of the season, the Cardinals celebrated Senior Night in style, cruising to a 6-2 win over the visiting Vikings. Fittingly, all of Greenwich’s goals came from seniors on its Senior Night.
“It was a great game with contributions from all members and a wonderful way to celebrate our amazing seniors and enjoy our last home game,” GHS coach Megan Wax said of the Cardinals’ triumph versus the Vikings.

Senior captain Julia Van de Rotte and senior captain Anna Boezen scored two goals apiece to power the Cardinals to their Senior Night victory. Ella Burchell, also a senior, began Greenwich’s scoring, tallying off an assist from senior Sydney Coyne with 7:42 remaining in the first quarter.
Van den Rotte generated a goal with 4:26 left in the opening quarter, giving Greenwich a 2-0 lead on Westhill. Boezen made it 3-0 in favor of the Cards, knocking the ball into the goal off a rebound at the 12:40 mark of the second quarter.
Greenwich entered intermission with a 3-0 lead and continued its stellar play once the second half commenced.

“This senior class has worked so hard all four years and continually impresses the coaching staff with their perseverance and hard work as well as their willingness to be flexible whenever the team needs them,” Wax noted.
Van de Rotte scored off a Boezen assist with Greenwich on a penalty corner, giving the Cardinals a 4-0 advantage with 6:55 to go in the third quarter.
Senior Delfina Rotella tallied at the 8:56 mark of the fourth quarter for Greenwich’s fifth goal. Jolie Vazquez, also a senior, sealed the scoring, tallying off a rebound on a penalty corner with 6:24 left in the game.

Tatum Wunderlich, a junior, made five saves for the victorious Cardinals.
“It was the perfect team win to end the regular season,” Wax said.
After playing Westhill, Greenwich was seeded sixth in the FCIAC Field Hockey Tournament and visited No. 3 Fairfield Ludlowe in the tourney’s quarterfinal-round on Oct. 30.

The Cardinals were defeated by a formidable Falcons squad, 6-1. Fairfield Ludlowe plays No. 2-seeded Staples in the FCIAC semifinals on Nov. 4 at Brien McMahon High School at 6:30 p.m. No. 1-seeded Darien plays fourth-seeded Wilton in the other FCIAC semifinal Nov. 4 at 4:30 p.m.
Up next for Greenwich (9-8) is the CIAC Class L Field Hockey Tournament. The Cardinals are seeded ninth and will visit eighth-seeded Conard in the opening round of the Class L Tournament on Nov. 11th at 4 p.m.
