A seven-goal performance by senior John Cataldo powered the Greenwich boys lacrosse team past host Ridgefield, 15-13, in a key FCIAC matchup held on Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals (3-2) extended their winning streak to three games with the road victory.
“It was a great win with solid goaltending and control of the possessions with winning faceoffs and groundballs,” Greenwich coach Bobby Lutz said. “We are still trying to make up for lost practices (the team was in quarantine for two weeks, several weeks ago) so we did a walkthrough in the morning and I could tell the boys were focused and ready.”
Senior Will Montesi recorded a hat trick, as did junior Bryce Metalios for the Cardinals.
“John Cataldo having seven goals shows what an off-ball threat he can be,” Lutz said. “We are spreading the ball around well and we still have some players a little behind with two starters missing over 20 days of practice, so we will only get better.”
Juniors James Pilc and Quinn Warwick added a goal apiece, while sophomore Brian Collins assisted on two goals for the victors. Warwick was 16 of 22 on faceoffs for the Cardinals, who received three saves from senior Will Clemens. The Cardinals needed a stellar defensive effort to contend with the Tigers potent scoring attack.
“Jimmy O’Malley and Chris Cataldo did a great job on the Colsey brothers,” Lutz said. “You can’t shut them down, but limiting their production was a main objective.”
Greenwich visits St. Joseph on Tuesday and Darien on Wednesday. The Cards will then host Stamford on Thursday and Fairfield Warde on Saturday.
