Tommy Healey sparked the Greenwich baseball team on the mound and Ryan Perez powered the squad at the plate in its game against host New Canaan on Friday.

Healey took a no-hitter into the seventh inning in pitching a two-hitter and Perez went 3 for 4 with a homer, triple and double for the Cardinals in their 6-1 win over the Rams.

The Cardinals, who upped their record to 8-2, scored two runs in the second inning, one run in the third and single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh. Healey, who won his first start of the season against Fairfield Ludlowe, was in control from the start. He pitched six hitless innings and retired a batter in the seventh inning, before allowing an infield single to New Canaan senior Cameron Wheeler and an RBI double to senior Jack O’Donnell.

“Tommy was fantastic,” Greenwich coach Adrian Arango said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better performance. He pounded the zone well with his two-seamer.”

Healey struck out two batters and walked just two in 6 1/3 innings of work.

“Tommy stepped up for us, he shut the door against a good New Canaan team,” Arango said. “His two-seam fastball was running in on the righties and we played spotless defense behind him. His change-up was also really good. When Tommy has that second pitch working, he is going to be tough to hit.”

Healey was helped by his defense behind him, as senior shortstop Christian Mingione and senior second baseman Auggie Bancroft each made nifty fielding plays. At the plate, Perez, a senior right fielder, had two runs scored and two RBIs. He was a single away from hitting for the cycle. Perez ignited the lineup by homering, tripling and doubling.

Senior Miles Langhorne went 2 for 4 with an RBI, while senior outfielder Jack Zola had two hits and one RBI for the Cardinals, winners of six of their last seven games. Mingione and senior catcher Felipe Echeto had one hit and one RBI apiece in the winning effort.

Greenwich is right back on the diamond Saturday, as it hosts FCIAC foe Staples at 3 p.m.

“The team is excited to play Staples,” Arango said. “Staples is a perennial power in the state and a good barometer for us.”
