
The Sacred Heart Greenwich field hockey team produced a dominant start to its season on Wednesday.
Scoring five first-quarter goals, Sacred Heart posted a convincing 7-0 season-opening win over host School of the Holy Child in an FAA game held in Rye, N.Y.
“We were very excited to start the official season today,” Tigers coach Alex Gheorghe said. “The team delivered an overall good performance. We were very pleased with the quality of the game we delivered.”
Vivi Caruso opened the game’s scoring for Sacred Heart, tallying with 9:00 remaining in the first quarter. Skylar Stewart tallied at the 7:46 mark, then Charley Nemec scored with 4:38 still left in the opening quarter, making it 3-0.
Delfina Gonzalez Lobo and Ainsley Clough also had one goal apiece in the first quarter. In the third quarter, Caroline Nemec scored her first goal of the game at the 3:12 mark. Her second goal of the afternoon came with 8:08 to go in the fourth quarter, putting the visiting Tigers on top, 7-0.
Mairead Stanton made 16 saves in goal for Holy Child. Helena Randolph had one stop in goal for the victors. Sacred Heart is in action again Saturday, as they will travel to NEPSAC foe Kent School for a 1:30 p.m. game.
