Greenwich High swims past Norwalk/McMahon to improve to 3-0

The Greenwich High School girls swimming team continued its impressive start to the season, defeating visiting FCIAC foe Norwalk/McMahon this past Friday, 99-77.

The Cardinals raised their record to 3-0 with the convincing win. Greenwich began the meet by winning the 200-yard medley relay. Bella Malchow, Michelle Weissler, Caterina Li and Tess Furno combined give the Cardinals a first-place finish in the event in 1:52.56

Sophomore Payton Foster won the 200-yard freestyle for Greenwich, touching the wall in 1:56.91. Teammate Emma Robinson, a senior, was second in the event, clocking in at 2:01.06. In the 200-yard individual medley, sophomore Sabrina Hobert was the winner for the Cardinals (2:13.95), followed by teammate Caterina Li, a senior (2:15.37).

Sydney Jee, a sophomore, raced to a first-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle, posting a time of 26.39. Right behind her was Cardinals teammate Bella Malchow, a senior (26.97). Junior Javiera Garcia was the 1-meter diving winner. Garcia earned a score of 230.63 points during six rounds of diving for the victory.

Sophomore Elizabeth Scharff was the runner-up in the diving event (194.93) for the Cards. Greenwich freshman Sena Bozkurt took first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:00.23. Robinson was second in 1:02.79. Malchow also placed second in the 100 freestyle (57.79), which was won by sophomore Samantha Taylor of Norwalk/McMahon (57.30).

In the 500-yard freestyle, Greenwich junior Daisy Decker showed her stamina, winning the race by recording a time of 5:32.15. Hobert finished second (5:34.66), followed by Jee (5:37.51). The 200-yard freestyle relay saw Foster, Bozkurt, Furno and Hobert give Greenwich a winning effort, combining for a time of 1:42.41. Greenwich swam exhibition from the 200 freestyle on, but they it had the meet’s best time in the 200 freestyle relay.

Foster posted the meet’s top time in the 100 backstroke (1:00.98) and Norwalk/McMahon senior Morgan Saunders was the 100 breaststroke winner (1:10.05). Bozkurt, Emma Stehmann, Weissler and Paulina Finz swam the 400 freestyle relay in 3:59.28 for Greenwich.

Up next for Greenwich is a big home meet against conference rival Ridgefield on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
