Receiving a goal from senior Zita Cohen, the Greenwich High School field hockey won for the fifth time in six games, edging host Trumbull, 1-0, in an FCIAC matchup held on Saturday.
“It was a really tough, hard-fought battle,” Greenwich coach Megan Wax said. “It was an intense game that had action on both sides of the field. We spent the majority of the first half on the defensive end and the second half on the attacking end.”
The game’s lone goal came in the fourth quarter, courtesy of Cohen and senior Justine Liguori. Liguori set Cohen up for the goal, giving Greenwich a 1-0 lead.
“The girls started the second half with a fire inside of them and really played with immense heart,” Wax said. “The ball moved quickly and efficiently and we were able to have many more scoring opportunities.”
Wax credited sophomore goalie Kelly Janssen for making a number of key saves and seniors Angelica Veronis and Ana Florina-Galic for their outstanding play in the midfield.
Greenwich, which has a record of 6-2, visits Staples on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
