Greenwich’s boys indoor track team placed second at the Class LL Championships; Up next for the Cardinals is the State Open

Flourishing in numerous events, the members of the Greenwich High School boys indoor track and field team left the CIAC Class LL Championships at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven last Saturday with an impressive medal collection and an outstanding finish in the team standings.

Totaling 55 team points, Greenwich placed a spectacular second in the team standings at the Class LL Championships, which included 17 teams. Hall won the team championship with 88 points and Manchester placed third (46).

Junior Gianluca Bianchi won the 300-meter dash at the Class LL Championships for Greenwich, crossing the finish line in 36.22 seconds. Teammate Caleb You, a freshman, was ninth (38.54).

In the 600-meter run, Cardinals sophomore Antonio Ciccarelli was ninth with a time of 1:29.41. In the 1,000-meter run, Greenwich senior ZJ Jelinek registered an impressive second place finish with a time of 2:36.57. Fairfield Ludlowe’s Tyler Bennett won the race in 2:35.57.

The 55-meter hurdles saw GHS senior Zach Carifa post a third-place finish, clocking in at 8.15 seconds. Blake Battaglia of Wilbur Cross took the 55-meter hurdle title, winning the event in 8.01.

Greenwich’s 4 x 200-meter relay team of senior Thomas Foster, senior John Sias, Bianchi and sophomore Harrison Goldenberg combined for a Class LL second-place time of 1:34.67. Hall posted a championship time of 1:33.32.

In the 4×400 meter relay, Carifa, Jelinek, Bianchi and Goldenberg gave the Cards a third-place finish (3:36.73). Greenwich captured the gold medal in the 1600 sprint medley, as Foster, Sias, Goldenberg and Jelinek recorded a 3:41.88 finish.

Carifa also excelled in the high jump with a leap of 5-10.00, good for the bronze medal.

Greenwich will bring the same group of athletes into tomorrow’s CIAC State Open Championships, which will also be held at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven.
