Greenwich High School’s field hockey team opened its 2022 season in top form, posting an impressive 5-0 win over host Norwalk in an FCIAC game held on Thursday night.
The Cardinals (1-0) were paced by sophomore Kate Donnellan, who recorded a hat trick.
“The girls came out to the season-opener with a lot of fire and speed and will to win,” Greenwich coach Megan Wax said. “Kate led the team with her intensity and really helped set the tone from the first minute.”
The Cardinals and Bears entered the second quarter scoreless, but Donnellan gave the visitors a 1-0 lead when she scored at the 13:04 mark of the second quarter off an assist from sophomore Stella Thibeault.
In the third quarter, Donnellan scored again, this time off a pass from junior Bernie Thompson, giving Greenwich a 2-0 advantage at the 10-minute mark. With 14:39 remaining in the fourth quarter, sophomore Aly Janssen converted a shot, making it 3-0. Thibeault assisted on Janssen’s tally.
Sofia Klingbeil, a sophomore, scored with 6:14 left in the final quarter, putting the Cards on top, 4-0. Donnellan then completed her hat trick, notching her third goal of the game with 1:30 left to play.
“Stella and Emilia (Arroyo) helped keep the pace on the forward line with received support from Caroline Babb in the midfield and Maddie Hoekman on the D-line,” Wax said.
Greenwich is back in action Monday against FCIAC foe Wilton at Cardinal Stadium at 4:30 p.m.
