Sacred Heart Greenwich’s field hockey team hosted The Hill School, one of the premier teams in the nation, on Friday in its season-opening game and the Tigers scored first in the matchup.

However, The Hill School from Pottstown, Pennsylvania, responded with four goals, which was too much for the Tigers to overcome on this day. Behind a two-goal second quarter, Hill posted a 4-1 comeback victory over Sacred Heart.

After a scoreless first quarter, Sacred Heart took a 1-0 lead with 14 minutes remaining in the second quarter. Senior tri-captain Delfina Gonzalez Lobo scored off an assist from Kate Nemec, giving the Tigers a 1-0 advantage. Hill tied the score at 1-1 with a goal at the 7:24 mark of the second quarter.

In the third quarter, Hill tallied with 7:14 remaining in the quarter and at the 3:19 mark to go ahead, 3-1. The visitors added one more goal in the fourth quarter.

Senior goalie Olivia Caponiti made 16 saves for Sacred Heart, which hosts School of the Holy Child on Wednesday at 4 p.m., then plays visiting Kent School next Saturday at 3 p.m.

“Today, we faced The Hill School, one of the top teams in the country, loaded with lots of National Team players and several DI recruits,” Sacred Heart coach Alex Gheorghe said. “We fought incredibly hard until the last minute, but unfortunately, we came up short after a very intense game. Overall, they pushed our limits and we learned what we need to focus on.”
