
Sacred Heart Greenwich’s volleyball team began its 2022 season in fine form, sweeping past visiting Rye Country Day School, 3-0, in an FAA match held on Wednesday.
The Tigers (1-0) won the match by set scores of 25-4, 25-12, 25-8. Sophomore outside hitter Grace Gapen registered eight kills, six service aces and five digs to pace Sacred Heart. Martina Bernal, a senior outside hitter, recorded five service aces, six digs and two kills, while junior setter/libero had seven service aces, 13 assists, three digs and one kill in the winning effort.
Sisters Martina and Emilia Bernal are the captains of the Tigers, who have a lot of road games upcoming. Sacred Heart will travel to Loomis Chaffee School on Saturday for a 3 p.m. match, then will visit Hamden Hall Country Day School on Monday at 4:15 p.m. and will be on the road for a matchup against Deerfield Academy and Buckingham Browne & Nichols on Sept. 24 at Deerfield.
Road games against FAA rival King School (Sept. 28) and Taft School (Oct. 1) follow. SHG will be at home again on Oct. 3 against neighborhood FAA foe Greenwich Country Day School.
The Tigers’ roster includes: Emilia Bernal, Martina Bernal, Annie Cornell, Emerson Eckert, Evangelyn Forte, Grace Gapen, Cait Haggerty, Jane Murphy, Ana Pizzimbono, Josephine Prinz, Kaitlin Robinson and Brianna Timlin.
