Receiving three goals apiece from senior Klara Mueffelmann and sophomore Kate Donnellan, Greenwich High School’s field hockey team cruised to a convincing 8-0 win over St. Joseph in a game held on Tuesday at St. Joseph in Trumbull.
“Klara and Kate continue to dominate the forward line,” Greenwich coach Megan Wax said.
Indeed, Mueffelmann and Donnellan scored early and often for the Cardinals, who improved their record to 4-2 with the road triumph.
Sophomore Stella Thibeault opened the game’s scoring, tallying off a Donnellan assist with 9:20 remaining in the first quarter. Mueffelmann’s unassisted goal gave GHS a 2-0 lead at the 3:41 mark of the first quarter.
Donnellan set up Mueffelmann for a tally in the final minute of the opening quarter. Following a scoreless second quarter, Mueffelmann scored off a penalty corner, making it 4-0 with 2:24 to go in the third quarter. Donnellan scored early in the fourth quarter off a pass from freshman Emilia Arroyo for the Cards’ fifth goal.
Mueffelmann, Donnellan and junior Aly Janssen notched fourth-quarter goals for the victors.
“It was another great team win and we’re hoping to keep the momentum going,” said Wax, whose squad has outscored the opposition, 25-0, in their last three games.
Up next for Greenwich is a big matchup against rival New Canaan on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at Cardinal Stadium. The game will be a rematch of last season’s CIAC Class L Tournament quarterfinals won by New Canaan, 1-0, in double overtime.
