Greenwich High field hockey team shuts out Newtown for decisive non-league win

Photo by David Fierro: Greenwich High’s girls field hockey team topped Newtown to continue its successful season.

After dropping a tough one-goal decision to undefeated Darien, the Greenwich High School field hockey team got right back on the winning track in impressive fashion on Saturday morning.

Receiving a hat trick from Caroline Babb and two goals from Klara Mueffelmann, the Cardinals were too much for Newtown, posting a convincing 7-0 victory at Cardinal Stadium.

With the win, Greenwich improved its record to 11-3-0-1.

“It was a great game on a beautiful fall day,” Greenwich coach Megan Wax said. “We possessed the ball for the majority of the game and we were able to get many players involved in the offensive production.”

Babb, a junior, opening the scoring, tallying with 10:03 left in the first quarter. Freshman Emilia Arroyo gave Greenwich a 2-0 lead, scoring off an assist from junior Liv Caminiti at the 1:46 mark of the first quarter. The goal was the result of a penalty corner.

Mueffelmann, a senior who is the Cards’ leading scorer, tallied twice in the second quarter. Her first goal 26 seconds into the second quarter was unassisted and her second tally was assisted by junior Aly Janssen at the 12:03 mark.

Caminiti capped the Cardinals’ second-quarter scoring with a goal with just eight seconds to go in the quarter. In the fourth quarter, Babb scored at the 13:00 mark and Janssen added a goal off a Babb pass with 2:07 left to play.

Greenwich held a 9-2 advantage on Newtown on penalty corners.
