Cardinals girls soccer team battles No. 1 St. Joseph to a scoreless tie on the road

Greenwich’s Ali Pennella, pictured here during a recent game against Wilton, helped pace the team’s effort in its most recent game against powerhouse St. Joseph in a road matchup in Trumbull.

Facing a powerhouse St. Joseph team they are going to play soon in the postseason, the Greenwich High girls soccer squad showed it can compete with the best, playing the Cadets to a scoreless tie this past Friday.

“It was a great 0-0 tie vs. St. Joseph, the defending state champs on their home field and Senior Night,” Greenwich coach Simon Rumbold said. “Our girls worked tirelessly, won their battles and played excellently.”

Following the draw, Greenwich’s record stands at 6-4-4 with one game remaining in its regular season. The Cardinals close out the regular season with a home game against Stamford Tuesday at 4 p.m. Greenwich will be the No. 8 seed in the FCIAC Tournament and visit that team again – St. Joseph in the quarterfinal-round of the conference tournament.

Rumbold credited senior midfielder Ali Pennella, junior defender Meghan Ross, senior goalie Isabella Gega and all who played for their fantastic play against formidable St. Joseph (12-1-1).
