Running to victory is certainly nothing new to Maddy Lee.
A Greenwich Academy junior, Lee entered Monday’s FAA Cross Country Championships as the winner of every league race this fall and she wasn’t about to have her success streak stopped at the much-anticipated championship meet.
Lee won the race at the FAA Cross Country Championships held at Sherwood Island State Park in Westport, registering a time of 19:04.1.
Besides winning all of the FAA races she has competed in this season, Lee also crossed the finish line first and captured the winner’s medal at the 2021 Cross Country Championships. She had a first-place finish in last season’s race in the FAA finals in 19:49.1, so she improved her time from a year ago by 45 seconds.
Behind Lee’s winning performance, Greenwich Academy finished second in the team standings out of eight teams with a team score of 79 points. Hopkins won the team title with 54 points. Greens Farms Academy was third (83 points), followed by Sacred Heart Greenwich (97), Greenwich Country Day School (121), Rye Country Day School (137), St. Luke’s (147) and Holy Child (163).
Hopkins junior Ava Maccaro placed second behind Lee with a time of 20:25.2 and Sacred Heart Greenwich junior Ava Lillis finished third in 20:26.6. Isabel Slippen of Rye Country Day School (20:52.7) and Macy Putka, a Greenwich Country Day School freshman (20:55.9) were fourth and fifth, respectively at Monday’s FAA championship meet at Sherwood Island.
Wylie Dell’Olio (Greenwich Country Day School, 21:06.2), Grace Horton (Greenwich Country Day, 21:09.0), Vivian Huang (Hopkins, 21:13.4), Maggie Finn of Sacred Heart (21:19) and Saki Tomita (Hopkins, 21:33) rounded out the top-10 finishers at the FAA championship meet.
Junior Grace Sullivan (21:44.7) of GA and her teammate Emily Goodman, a senior (21:47.2), finished 14th and 15th, respectively, while freshman Priya Marsh, also of the Gators, was 20th in 22:23.7.
Sophomore Natalie Simpson of Greenwich Country Day finished 22nd (22:46.6), while Greenwich Academy sophomore Penny Lazar was 31st (23:44). Jacquelyn Monahan, a senior, and Anne Finn, also a senior, posted times of 23:46 and 23:52.1, respectively for Sacred Heart, while GA freshman Olivia MacEachern finished the race in 23:52.8.
The top-10 finishers in the race earned All-FAA Team honors.
