Greenwich senior Javiera Garcia places fifth at FCIAC Diving Championships

Greenwich’s Javiera Garcia earned a top-five finish at the FCIAC Diving Championships.

Greenwich High School senior Javiera Garcia produced excellent dives at the FCIAC Diving Championships at Westhill High School in Stamford on Wednesday night, placing fifth at the competitive event.

Garcia totaled 367.35 points over 11 rounds of diving at the FCIAC Championships, good for fifth place out of 26 competitors.

Westhill/Stamford senior Hannah Chuckas won the FCIAC diving title, earning an 11-dive score of 440.75. Natalie Penman of New Canaan finished second (439.20), followed by teammate Kaitlyn Maggio (418.00).

Darien’s Megan Hayes was fourth (376.55) and Garcia posted her fifth-place finish, behind consistent efforts in each round of her dives. Kate Whitaker of Staples (358.30, sixth place), junior Ava Vranos of Greenwich (357.40, seventh), Annelise Enters (Darien, 343.90, eighth), Mia Guster (Staples, 343.65, ninth) and junior Elizabeth Scharff of Greenwich (339.95, 10th) rounded out the top-10 finishers at the FCIAC finals.

Also for Greenwich, junior Mackenzie Newi was 18th with 210.10 points. The FCIAC Swimming Championships will be held tomorrow at Greenwich High School at 6:30 p.m. The Cardinals are the defending FCIAC champions and should receive stiff competition from Darien and Ridgefield at the championship meet.

Up next for Garcia and Greenwich’s divers is the CIAC Class LL Championships, which will be held at Sheehan High School on Nov. 10. The State Open Diving Championships is scheduled to take place on Nov. 17 at Middletown High School.
