
A strong effort was given by Greenwich High School’s girls basketball team during its game against undefeated Fairfield Ludlowe on Tuesday night in Fairfield.
The Falcons continued their perfect season, topping the Cardinals, 49-39, in an FCIAC game. With the victory, Ludlowe ran its record to 8-0 overall and 5-0 against FCIAC competition. Greenwich sports an overall record of 3-4 and is 1-2 in the FCIAC.
“It was a really tough battle against a very talented and tall Ludlowe team,” Greenwich coach Megan Wax said. “Our girls refused to take any plays off and continually pushed themselves to be more aggressive both offensively and defensively.”
The host Falcons held a 15-8 lead after the first quarter and brought a 26-13 lead into halftime. Junior guard Carolyn Frankle scored a team-best 12 points for the Cardinals, who scored 16 points in the fourth quarter.
Frankle had a 10-point second half and finished the matchup with two 3-pointers. Senior guard Sophia Sergio scored seven points, including on 3-pointer, while senior backcourt mate Laura Smego added six points on two 3-pointers for Greenwich.
Seniors Caitlin Finnegan and Kaleigh Sommers registered 11 points apiece for Ludlowe, which received eight points from senior Rory Kudzy. Sophomore Kate Cimador posted 10 points for the victors.
Freshman guard Madi Utzinger contributed five points for the Cardinals, while teammate Ayanna Davenport, a junior guard chipped in four points. Senior forward Julia Monteiro and junior forward Riana Xhekaj had two points apiece for GHS.
Greenwich visits FCIAC rival Staples tomorrow at 7 p.m., then hosts conference foe Norwalk on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
