Brunswick hockey team defeats Lawrenceville for its third straight win

Holding a commanding shots-on-goal advantage, the Brunswick School hockey team edged out Lawrenceville School, 4-3, in a matchup held in New Jersey on Wednesday night.

The shot count heavily favored Brunswick, 43-22, in this road matchup. Bruins coach Mike Kennedy noted that the team breathed a bit of a sigh of relief on the bench after junior Ryan Wachtel’s empty-netter with one minute to go, but the Big Red answered with 16.8 seconds to play to make things interesting until the final buzzer.

Junior defenseman Cooper Cleaves earned player of the game honors with two goals. Cleaves’ first goal tied the game in the opening period after following his own rebound off the back boards, His second goal came with the Bruins on a power-play, as he converted a one-time slap shot, giving Brunswick a 3-1 lead in the third period.

Senior Daniel Hu, who continues to find the scoresheet for the Bruins, netted the other goal in the second period. Hu found himself in the area just above the blue paint before chipping home a rebound for a key goal. Albany Academy visits Hartong Rink on Friday night for a 5 p.m. faceoff.
