Four Greenwich High School girls basketball players earned All-FCIAC Team honors, including seniors Sophia Sergio and Carolyn Frankle, who were Second and Third Team selections, respectively.

Sergio, a senior guard, who filled the role as one of the Cardinals’ captains, enjoyed an impressive final season with the squad, posting doubles figures in points in almost every game, while providing strong defensive play.

One of Greenwich’s leading scorers, Sergio scored 18 points in a victory against Amistad, poured in 15 points in the team’s final game of the 2022-2023 season – a loss against East Hartford in the first round of the CIAC Class LL Tournament – and totaled 14 points against Danbury, to name just a few of her numerous double-digit scoring games.

Sergio, an All-FCIAC Second Team honoree, also provided significant leadership and helped organize the team’s offense from her guard position.

Frankle, an All-FCIAC Third Team selection, followed up a productive junior season as the Cardinals’ point guard, with a superb senior season this winter. Along with Sergio, Frankle helped ignite Greenwich’s offense throughout the season.

In the Cardinals’ win against Norwalk, Frankle amassed a career-high 27 points, just one of many games in which she posted double-digit figures in scoring.

A consistent shooter, Frankle was a force from 3-point range and made a number of clutch baskets throughout the season, while also displaying her strong dribbling skills. She too, was a senior captain, displaying leadership on and off the court.

Freshman guard Madi Utzinger and junior forward Riana Xhekaj are each All-FCIAC Honorable Mention selections. Utzinger made an immediate impact to the Cardinals’ backcourt in her first season on the squad.

Utzinger aided the Cardinals in the scoring department, using her stellar shooting and ability to drive to the basket to score key points in a number of games.

Xhekaj emerged as a force in the low post in her first season for the Cardinals. She was one of Greenwich’s leading rebounders and provided consistent scoring at the forward position, sparking the team throughout the season.

Utzinger and Xhekaj will be relied upon to help lead the team on both ends of the court next season.
