
Saturday saw the Greenwich High School softball team travel to New Fairfield for a non-conference game and the Cardinals nearly posted their first win of the season, as they came back from deficits twice to force extra innings.
But New Fairfield scored a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to pull out a hard-fought 6-5 victory over Greenwich. With the tough loss, the Cardinals are now 0-3 on the season. They lost to Stratford and Westhill their first two games of the season.
Against New Fairfield on Saturday, the Cardinals took a 4-2 lead by scoring four runs in the top of the fifth inning. After New Fairfield regained the lead at 5-4 with a three-run bottom of the fifth, Greenwich tied the score with one run in the seventh inning.
Sophomore Cameron Clark got the start on the mound for Greenwich and pitched a complete game. Clark struck out seven batters against New Fairfield, which finished with 13 hits. She held the home team scoreless in six of the nine innings, while pitching to her sister, Campbell, a junior catcher.
Senior outfielder/tri-captain Ciarra Castro led Greenwich at the plate. Castro went 3 for 5 with two RBIs, while Cameron Clark helped her own cause, going 2 for 5 with one RBI for GHS.
Sophomore infielder Casey Natale had two hits for the Cardinals, who are in action again when they host Brien McMahon on Tuesday for a 4:15 p.m. FCIAC matchup.
