
Winning its third match in three days, Greenwich High School’s boys tennis team received a big boost from its doubles teams in a hard-fought 4-3 win over host Trumbull in an FCIAC matchup today. The Cardinals swept the three doubles matches to improve its record to 6-0.
Freshman Volodymyr Dombrovskyi was victorious in singles competition for the Cardinals, winning his match at the No. 1 spot, 6-2, 3-0 (retired). In doubles action, seniors Cai Jain and David Karetsky gave Greenwich a 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. 1 spot.
At second doubles, senior Zachary Toback and junior Tristan Sowter recorded a 7-5, 6-4 victory against their Trumbull foes. Sophomore Nicholas Frumin and senior Eli Norton were 6-1, 6-1 winners for GHS over Trumbull.
On Wednesday at Norwalk High School, the Cardinals swept the Bears, 7-0. Senior Dylan Atkinson won his match at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 7-6 (2). Karetsky notched a 6-0, 6-2 win at second singles, while junior Bruce Lunder swept his match at third singles, 6-0, 6-0. Frumin was also a 6-0, 6-0 winner at No. 4.
Jain and senior Nick O’Brien were 6-0, 6-0 victors at No. 1 doubles versus Norwalk, while sophomore Manuel Galli Specos/Toback teamed up for a 6-0, 6-0 win at second doubles.
Sophomore Daniel Lee/Norton also posted a 6-0, 6-0 triumph at third doubles against the Bears.
On Tuesday against visiting Fairfield Warde, the Cards won three of the four singles matches and all three doubles matchups in a 6-1 victory. Dombroskyi (6-2, 6-2, No. 2), Galli Specos (6-2, 6-1, No. 2) and Hunt (6-2, 6-3, No. 3) each won their singles matches for the Cardinals. Atkinson was edged in three sets at first singles, 6-3, 1-6, 3-6.
Karetsky/Mittal (6-1, 7-5), Jain/O’Brien (6-1, 7-5) and Lunder/Sowter (6-4, 7-6 (4) each won their respective matches at first-third doubles, respectively, for GHS.
Greenwich should have a competitive week coming up. The Cardinal will host rivals New Canaan on Monday and Darien on Tuesday, then travel to Ridgefield on Thursday.
