Brunswick hosted Deerfield on Cos Cob Harbor in a match-up of the defending NEIRA (New England Interscholastic Rowing Association) champions in the boys eights and fours, respectively. Deerfield is the defending USRowing Youth National Champions and have won eight straight NEIRA titles in the coxed four. This year, Deerfield switched from the fours to the eights.
Brunswick’s first eight boat was able to get out to an early lead and never relinquished it. The crew of Lucas Tan (coxswain), Henry Andren (stroke), Jimmy Cabot, Reed Eddy, Campbell Officer, Ruffin Bryant, Scott Raissis, Sam Subramaniam, and Justin Guo (bow) covered the 1275-meter course in a time of 3:48.8 with a bit of open-water back to Deerfield in 3:54.2.
In the second 8’s race, Brunswick and Deerfield were essentially level with 200-meters to go when Brunswick caught a boat-stopping, over-the-head “crab.” Deerfield won the race in a time of 4:00.5 with Brunswick finishing over a length back in 4:04.9.
Brunswick’s 3rd Eight earned a quality win in tough conditions, covering the course in 4:03.6. Deerfield was less than a length back in a time of 4:06.2. Deerfield won the 4th Eights race by several boat lengths.
