Greenwich High girls tennis team sweeps Bridgeport Central for Senior Day victory

It was a successful Senior Day for the Greenwich High School girls tennis team, which remained undefeated with a 7-0 sweep of visiting Bridgeport Central on Monday.

The soaring Cardinals now have an 11-0 record overall and are 10-0 in FCIAC competition. In singles play against Central, junior Kyra Dybas was victorious for Greenwich, 6-0, 6-0, over Emily Alfonso Olmos.

At second singles, senior Ivanna Diez de Bonilla was a 6-0, 6-0 winner against Central’s Emily Chiroy. Shining Sun, a freshman, posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3, while senior Mei McGuinness produced the same results at fourth singles for the Cardinals.

Doubles play saw junior Emily Weinstein and senior Julia Tamis notch a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 1 spot. Sophomore Yume Inagawa and freshman Caitlin Mahoney swept to a 6-0, 6-0 win at second doubles, as did seniors Valentina Rivano and Sydney Floch at the third doubles spot.

The Cardinals also defeated Ridgefield recently in a home match. Dybas won at first singles against Tigers junior Ava Treat, 6-0, 6-1. Diez de Bonilla was perfect at second singles, topping sophomore Cecilia O’Malley, 6-0, 6-0. At third singles, GHS junior Malena Schraa posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Ridgefield’s Owen Dulecki.

Lilly Foley, a junior, also won her match at fourth singles, 6-0, 6-0, for the Cards. In the No. 1 doubles matchup, Weinstein/Tamis were 6-0, 6-0 winners against Charlotte Bowler/Skylar Kleinman of the Tigers.

Inagawa/Mahoney (No. 2) and won at second doubles, 6-1, 6-0, while sophomore Izzy Everett and freshman Madison Wilber were victorious at No. 3, 6-0, 6-0.

Greenwich honored its five seniors on Senior Day: Diez de Bonilla, Floch, McGuinness, Rivano and Tamis.
