The 2023 season was one of challenges for the Greenwich High School baseball team, which recovered nicely from a slow start to earn seven victories, six of which came during the second half of its spring campaign.
After starting the season with a 1-9 record, including a pair of close losses, the Cardinals didn’t pack it in – instead they rallied and posted a representative season, even though their tough beginning prevented them from qualifying for the FCIAC and CIAC Class LL postseason tournaments.
“I’m proud of the guys and the fight we showed in the second half of the season,” Greenwich coach Adrian Arango said. “We really turned our season around and stuck together as a team.”

One of the highlights of the Cardinals’ season was their Senior Day home win against FCIAC foe Wilton on May 13. Not about to lose on one of their final home games of the season, Greenwich recorded a come-from-behind 6-5 victory over Wilton on Senior Day.
“It’s senior day and you want to play your best baseball that day,” Arango said. “We made a great comeback to get the win.”
Wilton held a 3-0 lead after the second inning, then Greenwich responded with two runs and trailed, 3-2, after three innings of action. The Warriors added a pair of runs and took a 5-2 advantage into the seventh inning. With one out and no one on base in the seventh inning, the Cardinals began their comeback.

Senior Owen Lanzarone began the Cardinals’ seventh-inning rally with a double, junior John McHugh followed by hitting a double, bringing Greenwich to within 5-3. Nathan Jones, a senior, delivered an RBI double, making it 5-4.
Alex Palmer, a senior, singled and senior Mike Bocchino walked, setting the stage for catcher Cody Baker. Baker, a junior, singled, giving the Cardinals a 6-5 triumph.

“It was as dramatic a Senior Day as you could have,” Arango noted. “It was a great win and our seniors came up with clutch hits.”
McHugh went 2 for 3 with one run scored and two RBIs, while Jones had two hits and two RBIs in the winning effort. Senior Tyler Senft had two hits and pitched four innings for GHS.

“Tyler Senft as he always does, has gutted it out for us,” Arango said. “After the first inning, he figured some things out.”
Senft allowed three earned runs in four innings, then Lanzarone pitched three scoreless innings to earn the win.
“Owen threw three innings of shut out ball and had really good stuff,” Arango said. “He held them right there, to five runs.”

The seniors that Greenwich honored on its Senior Day win included, Bocchino, Teddy Flinn, Wyatt Gibson, Jones, Lanzarone, Sam Manos, TJ Messina, Palmer, Senft, Miles Trager and Andrew Walko. Bocchino, Gibson and Jones were the Cardinals’ senior captains.
In Greenwich’s final home game of its 2023 season, it defeated Whitney Tech., 12-2, in a five-inning matchup. Michael Orrico, Baker, McHugh, Jake Stefanowicz, Troy Goodwin, Nick D’Andrea, John Junius, Tommy Passamano and Gavyn Gennarelli were the non-seniors on the team, who will look to return to help the Greenwich squad next season.
