Another game, another decisive win for the Brunswick School lacrosse team.
That’s the impressive pattern the Bruins have followed and Westminster School was the latest team that felt Brunswick’s power when they teams met at Cosby Field on May 4.
Ranked No. 1 in the USA Lacrosse High School Boys National Top 25 poll, Brunswick continued its perfect season, pulling away for a 16-8 victory over visiting Westminster School. The win moved the Bruins’ record up to 13-0, heading into Wednesday’s home matchup against NEPSAC rival Avon Old Farms School.
Senior captain Hudson Hausmann scored a team-high four goals, while seniors Payton Anderson and Kyle Pagnani each recorded hat tricks to highlight the Bruins Senior Day win.
“It was a really good game for us on Senior Day, we were able to get a lot of guys in, so it was a lot of fun,” Hausmann said. “It was a fun game for all of us.”
This NEPSAC matchup was tied at 3-3 in the first quarter, but the Bruins soon gained separation and entered halftime with a 7-3 lead. Seniors Graham Burchill, Hausmann, and Robert Plath ignited the Bruins with first-quarter goals, then Anderson sparked the victors in the second quarter.
“I think we played really well, we started out a little slow in the first quarter and then we picked it up,” Anderson said. “The second half too, our younger guys were scoring in bunches. We just looked good all-around.”
Saturday’s Senior Day triumph capped another winning week for Brunswick, which also beat Ridgefield High School and Delbarton School.
The win against Westminster was especially significant to the 14 seniors on the team who were honored with a special Senior Day ceremony after the game.
“This day is so special, Senior Day taking a picture with the numbers – it’s gone by so fast with this team and it means so much with these 14 seniors,” Bruins senior captain/defender Luke Hublitz said. “We started out kind of slow but by the second quarter, third quarter, we played great and we got to get a bunch of the younger guys in toward the end, which was great. It was great to celebrate the seniors, get the younger guys in – it was a great day.”
Indeed, being one of the captains has been an experience Hublitz has cherished.
“I’m honored to be selected by all of my teammates to be a captain,” he noted. “It’s been so much fun, more than I’ve ever expected. Senior year is the culmination of high school lacrosse, so there’s a lot of pressure, but I couldn’t have asked for more. It’s been going so well and it’s been so much fun.”
Sophomore Lucas Garcia and Owen Iles, a junior, added one goal apiece, as did senior Connor Crosby in the Bruins’ convincing home win versus Westminster, which came out determined to give a strong showing.
“They came out and had some scrap to them, so edge and we had to play tough,” Brunswick senior captain Casey Quinson said. “Each play was a battle and we just had to work harder than them.”
Said Hausmann: “I think they’re a really good team, they have a lot of good players. Part of what we say is that we’re always going to get a team’s best. It was a fun game for us. The first half was good, the big thing we’re working on is coming out hot. The past couple of games we’ve been really slow, overall, it was a pretty good first half.”
Each game, the Bruins have been consistent in their approach, giving their optimum effort throughout, while taking no opponents lightly.
“This senior group – it’s a really fun group to coach,” Brunswick coach David Bruce said. “They all looked great, they have done a great job of leading this team. The team is overachieving and enjoying every moment. We have plenty of talent, but they work hard. They spend time after practice, working a bit extra and it shows. They figure out a way to come ahead in games.”
Anderson added: “This year we really came together as a team. The seniors are really pushing the narrative of coming together and just being a group of guys giving it their all every single day. We’re rolling right now and I couldn’t be happier with the group.”
“It’s been like nothing else, it’s special on the field, but what makes this group so special is how close we are off the field,” Quinson noted. “Every practice we’re ready to scrap it out and battle. The culture and brotherhood we have with each other is unmatched.”
Brunswick hosts Avon Old Farms School on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m., then visits Salisbury School on Friday.
“We’re just taking one game at a time, one practice at a time,” Hausmann said. “The ranking only matters at the end of the season, so one game at a time all the way through.”
