Excelling in singles and doubles play, the Greenwich Academy tennis team has indeed, been tough to top, once again this spring.

Greenwich Academy has enjoyed sensational seasons on the tennis courts for well more than a decade and this year it is producing another memorable campaign.

Heading into Friday’s road match against FAA opponent Greens Farms Academy, GA has an overall record of 10-1 and sports a sparkling 6-1 record in the league. The Gators put another FAA match in the win column on May 6, sweeping Rye Country Day School, 7-0, at Purchase College in Purchase, N.Y., while displaying their depth.

“We’re definitely doing really well, we have a deep lineup this year,” said GA senior co-captain Grace Genereux, who plays at No. 4 singles. “I’ve been on the team since I was a freshman and this is the best team we’ve ever had and I hope we can continue to play well. We’ve been playing really well.”

Genereux is a team captain along with senior Juliet Winegardner, who competes at No. 3 doubles for the Gators.

“Everyone has so much love for each other on this team, which is the best part,” said Winegardner, who like Genereux is a two-season captain. “Everyone cheers each other on and everyone wants each other to do well. I’m pretty confident that we’ll keep doing what we’re doing and being successful.”

The Gators’ victory against the Wildcats improved their record to a perfect 10-0 overall and 6-0 in the FAA. GA then traveled to FAA rival Hopkins School yesterday and was edged, 4-3, in an ultra-competitive match. Hopkins won the FAA regular season championship with the triumph, continuing its undefeated season in league competition.

GA hosts Greens Farms Academy in its final FAA match of the regular season, then takes its skills to the FAA Championships, which takes place on Saturday at Greens Farms in Westport and continues on Monday also at GFA.

In their match against the Wildcats, the Gators received a 7-5, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles from Charlotte Pastel. A junior, Pastel also played at the first singles spot one season ago.

She knows the chemistry and competitive spirit the team features have been keys to the successful spring.

“This team is so special, it’s such a great group of girls,” Pastel said. “We’re all best friends. We’re all so close and it’s very competitive too.”

Ella Loehnis, left and Elsa Burgess combined for an impressive victory at No. 1 doubles for the Greenwich Academy tennis team against Rye Country Day School in an FAA match at Purchase College in Purchase, N.Y. The Gators won, 7-0.

“We’ve had a lot of challenging matches,” Pastel continued. “It’s fun to have good matches and good competition and being challenged by my teammates as well.”

Pastel is also member of Greenwich Academy’s squash team, which has experienced unprecedented success the past dedicated. This past winter, Pastel and Greenwich Academy’s squash team won the U.S. Squash Team Championships in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It marked the eighth season in a row that GA won the national squash championship.

Prior to playing Rye Country Day School, the Gators were victorious against Hotchkiss School at home in convincing fashion, 7-0.

“I don’t think this team has ever been this deep before, we just swept Hotchkiss, 7-0,” Pastel noted. “That’s never happened before.”

At No. 2 singles, eighth-grader Emily Bragg gave Greenwich Academy a 6-0, 6-0 win against Ana Petricione.

“It was a great match, we both played well and I was happy with my game,” said Bragg, who has played well beyond her years.

“It doesn’t feel like I am any younger than any of them, they’re all so nice to me,” Bragg said. “They have been super welcoming. We’re cheering each other on right now and always so supportive of each other. We’re super excited for the rest of the season.”

The No. 1 doubles team of Elsa Burgess and Ella Loehnis showed their experience and stellar teamwork on their way to defeating Rye Country Day’s Liz Kavanaugh/Kaitlyn Wong, 6-1, 6-0.

“Elsa and I have such good chemistry, we’re very good partners, we understand each other on and off the court,” said Loehnis, a sophomore. “I think that’s super important with a doubles team – being friends on and off the court. That helps us understand each other through hard matches.”

“This is our second year, we played last year,” Burgess said. “Coming into the season knowing each other’s playing styles and knowing that we work really well together was a big confidence boost for this year also.”

“We have so much fun on the court, off the court,” Burgess continued. “The team chemistry is great.”

In the No. 3 singles matchup, junior Emily Sherman swept past her Rye Country Day opponent, 6-0, 6-0.

“I have gone undefeated and that’s from my team supporting me and using tennis as an escape from the stress from school,” said Sherman, who enjoys competing on the tennis court each day.

“It’s been a lot of fun, it’s helped me balance school and athletics,” Sherman noted. “It’s been really great, the team dynamic is what’s helping us have such a successful season. We’re all so excited to be on the court together and that’s what’s making it such a good season.”

Genereux kept her winning season going at fourth singles, winning her matchup against RCDS, 6-0, 6-1.

“I thought I played pretty consistently, I served well and I was steady,” said Genereux, who has seen the team play at its optimum level each match.

“We have a really good singles lineup, everyone is experienced in matches, which is good,” Genereux said. “Basically, our entire singles lineup plays tournaments and out of school, so everyone is really ready for every match, which is great. We have a really good team and everyone gets along, that’s why it’s been easy to be a captain.”

At second doubles, Mia Jones and Shields McClure were victorious in their match for Greenwich Academy. Jones and McClure, who have complemented each other well all season, were 6-2, 6-3 winners at the second doubles spot for the Gators.

At No. 3, Winegardner and Lily Kruse won a hard-fought 6-3, 6-7, 10-7 match versus the Wildcats.

“We had a strong first set, we came out strong and won it, 6-3,” Winegardner noted. “Then the second set it was way closer than we would have liked it to be. It ended up going to a tiebreaker, which we lost. Later in the tiebreak, we got it back and it was definitely helpful to have our team cheer us on.”

As for being one of the team’s captains?

“I’ve been a co-captain with Grace Genereux for two years now,” Winegardner noted. “We were captains last year, we are captains this year and we have a great dynamic. But everyone on the team plays a part in leadership. Everyone is cheering everyone on, I feel like everyone carries a part of that role themselves.”
