Cardinals boys track and field team victorious against Stamford in season opening meet at Cardinal Stadium

Defending FCIAC track and field champion Greenwich began its 2026 season in spectacular style, winning every event in its victory over Stamford High School in summer-like weather at Cardinal Stadium on April 14th.

The Cardinals, who won the team title at the FCIAC Track and Field Championships for the third time in four years last season, scored 126 points in the season-opening meet against Stamford, which did not score. Greenwich is coming off a 2025 season in which it won the FCIAC championship by totaling 140 team points at the conference championship meet at Danbury High School, 13 points ahead of runner-up Danbury.

Against Stamford, the Cardinals produced impressive efforts in both the running and field events. Senior Jack Hannafin won the 100-meter run for Greenwich versus Stamford with a time of 11.01 seconds. Daniel Silver, a senior, was second for the Cardinals, clocking in at 11.13 seconds. Right behind him was teammate David Boside, also a senior, (11.14). Senior Michael Lai was fifth in the 100 (11.46) for GHS.

In the 200-meter race, Boside earned the meet’s top honors (22.39 seconds) and Hannafin took second in 22.57. Silver (22.58), Lai (23.61) and Noah Frankel (23.64) were third to fifth, respectively, in the 200-meter run. Junior Diego Cordero gave GHS a first-place finish in the 400-meter race. Cordero crossed the finish line in 51.32 seconds.

Cordero edged teammate Ethan Chan, a senior, who placed second in 51.41. Freshman Hector Rodriguez was third (51.91), while Cardinals teammates Daniel Ciccarelli (52.01) and Andrew Mahoney (52.43) were fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 400.

Senior Matteo Chiesara earned a first-place finish in the 800 race, posting a time of 2:01.05. Junior William Monaco finished second in 2:04.41, while junior Oliver Eaton took third (2:06.86) for the host Cardinals.

Benjamin Hayes, a senior, finished fourth in the 800 in 2:08.80 and James Hayes, a sophomore, placed fifth for GHS in 2:09.28. James Hayes was the winner of the 1,600-meter race (4:27.93) and Benjamin Hayes placed second in 4:28.00.

Eaton had a third-place finish in the 1,600 (4:28.93) and Chiesara was fourth (4:37.04). Cardinals senior Christopher Pierre swept the hurdles races. Pierre won the 110 hurdles in 15.92 seconds. Sophomore James Kennedy placed second in 17.51 seconds, followed by GHS teammate Safwan Boujid, a sophomore, (20.90).

Pierre won the 300 hurdles in 42.01 seconds, followed by Kennedy (44.55) and Boujid (47.04). The 4×100-meter relay foursome of Greenwich’s Alexander Yu, Andrew Mahoney, Devin Solis and Noah Frankel combined for a winning time of 45.09 seconds.

In the 4×400 relay race, Boside, Hannafin, Silver and Ciccarelli combined for a winning time of 3:30.39. The field events were led by Cardinals senior Jacob Mobley. Mobley was the shot put winner (48’3) and finished first in the discus as well (133’6). Freshman Adrian Aliago finished second in the shot put (34’11) and GHS junior teammate Finn O’Connor was third (33’10).

Mobley won the discus with a throw of 133’6 and O’Connor took second (101’9). Cardinals sophomore finished first in the javelin (139’6) and Paul Cappiali, also a sophomore, had a second-place finish (123’6) for GHS.

Greenwich’s runners tested their skills against each other in the running events against Stamford at Cardinal Stadium.

Jagger Palange, a junior, was the winner for Greenwich in the high jump (5’2) and sophomore teammate Kai Marsh finished second (5’0). Junior teammate Santiago Seitun, also a junior, had a jump of 5’0 as well.

Sophomore Alexander Baig turned in a winning effort for GHS in the pole vault (11’0) and junior Ryan Strassel finished second (7’6).

In the long jump, senior Aldren Alfonso took the meet’s top honors for the Cards (18’7.25) and sophomore teammate Amare Eddings was second (18’05).

Greenwich is in action again Tuesday (April 21st) at 4 p.m. at Cardinal Stadium.
