Starting strong and finishing with a flurry, Greenwich High School’s varsity boys lacrosse team added another win to its record, this time, against an unfamiliar opponent on April 18 at Cardinal Stadium – Duxbury High School from Massachusetts.
The Cardinals seized an early three-goal lead on the visitors from Massachusetts, then after Duxbury closed to within one goal, the hosts opened a four-goal advantage in the fourth quarter, before earning an impressive 8-5 victory, their third win of their 2026 season.
Freshman attack Zach Wysocki recorded a hat trick with one assist, junior attack Josh Agreda registered one goal and two assists, senior captain/attack/midfielder Boden Farmer had one goal and one assist and defender Teddy Johnson, also a senior captain, posted one goal and one assist to lead the Cardinals’ offense versus Duxbury. Tyler Bell and Tyler Phillips also added one goal apiece in the win.
The early-season results have seen Greenwich defeat Weston in overtime, 7-6, and play Ridgefield and Mamaroneck (N.Y.) well in close losses. Ridgefield edged GHS recently, 9-7.

“We had two big games against Mamaroneck and Ridgefield and both are really top programs,” Greenwich head coach Bobby Lutz said following the Cardinals’ win against Duxbury. “Mamaroneck is one of the top schools in the country. I think defensively, we’re doing really well. Almost the entire ‘D’ from last year came back.”
One season ago, Greenwich reached the quarterfinal-round of the CIAC Class LL Lacrosse Tournament where it lost to host Staples. The Cardinals, who finished their 2025 season with a record of 11-8, also qualified for the FCIAC Tournament and were eliminated in the quarterfinals by Darien. Greenwich returns a strong nucleus of athletes on defense and its younger players on offense are making steady strides with each game.
Senior attack/captain Dean Kim, one of Greenwich’s top offensive players in past seasons, who was off to a standout start this season, suffered a knee injury during a recent game and will be sidelined for the season. Therefore, several players have been relied upon to help provide spark to the squad’s attack/offense.
“Dean Kim went down with an ACL, he’s a tough kid to replace,” Lutz said. “They are really working hard in practice, we’ve put guys in new spot, but they’re picking it up quickly.”

Senior goalie/captain Jack Hamel made eight saves and junior Mark Critchell won 11 of the 16 faceoffs he took in the Cards’ home triumph versus Duxbury. Leading 1-0 after the first quarter, the Cardinals took a 3-0 lead on Duxbury on goals from Zach Wysocki and Agreda. Agreda’s tally came with 7:36 remaining in the second quarter. After the visitors tallied twice, Wysocki converted a shot from 12 yard out, making it 4-2 in favor of the Cardinals heading into halftime.
“We’ve had a lot of injuries, with Dean Kim, one of our best offensive players coming out and we’ve had a lot of younger guys stepping up – Josh Agreda, Max Townsend, Zach Wysocki – all the guys are stepping up,” Johnson said. “Everyone is playing their role and we’re trusting our team.”
Johnson registered a goal in the third quarter, which concluded with GHS ahead of Duxbury, 6-3. Wysocki added two fourth-quarter goals in the Cards’ win.
“I thought it was a good all-around effort,” Farmer said following the win over Duxbury. “The offense was firing, the defense was working hard. Everyone was bringing each other up.”

Indeed, the Cardinals have put forth a consistent effort in each one of their games so far this spring.
“Another thing that coach brings up a lot is play quarter by quarter, don’t think about saving your energy for the fourth,” Farmer noted. “Think about the now – play in the present.”
Farmer, Zach Wysocki and sophomore midfielder Max Townsend have helped power Greenwich’s offense, while Johnson and Alex Neitzell, a senior captain, pace the defense.
“We did an amazing job, we’ve been working a lot on defense, a lot on offense,” Neitzell noted. “We lost a couple of key guys earlier in the season and a lot of guys have done a good job of stepping up and filling those gaps.”

Greenwich knew it was up for a challenge against Duxbury and as the results indicate, rose to the occasion.
“I love the energy we bring to every game and that’s why we’ve been able to win,” Neitzell said. “They’re a great team, they have a really good offense. You can tell those guys have played for a while, they know what they are doing. I just felt we had more energy, more tenacity and more grit than they did.”
“These guys (Duxbury) are really good, they are usually a top school in Massachusetts and they’ve got enough players to be a major threat,” Lutz said.
Said Farmer: “With that team being from Massachusetts, we didn’t have a lot of film, we didn’t have a lot to look at, but we came in and trusted ourselves and trusted our game plan and it worked out.”

Hamel has been a constant source of inspiration in goal with the amount of saves he makes and Critchell has ignited the Cards by winning key faceoffs.
“We just tried to keep our composure throughout and the guys in front of me made my job a lot easier,” Hamel said after the win vs. Duxbury. “They gave up some pretty easy shots by the other team, they made my life easier.”
Hamel discussed the significance of the defensive unit having experience.
“It means a lot, I don’t have to direct them through everything,” he said. “I just focus on the shot and they get to do the rest. We’re all kind of moving as one right now – great chemistry. We have a lot more games to play, we just have to keep our heads up and keep working.”

Greenwich’s defenders certainly appreciate their goalie.
“He’s amazing, he makes all the plays we need him to make,” Neitzell said of Hamel. “He clears the groundballs and it’s a pleasure to have him on defense.”
In a 7-6 overtime win against Weston in early April, Farmer tallied four goals and two assists, Kim scored twice and had an assist, Townsend had one goal and Zach Wysocki added two assists. Phillips also assisted on a goal.
Against Ridgefield, Farmer (two goals, one assist), Zach Wysocki (1 goal, two assists), Townsend (two goals), Phillips (one goal) and Agreda (one goal) led Greenwich’s offensive output.

“It looks like next year, almost everyone comes back,” Lutz said of his young GHS squad. “We have to do really well this year to prepare for next season. The kids are buying into it. Weston was a big overtime win.”
Greenwich visited FCIAC opponent Fairfield Ludlowe on April 21st, then hosts FCIAC rival Darien on April 23rd.
