Two more matches, two more convincing victories for the Greenwich High School varsity girls tennis team.
The defending FCIAC and Class LL tournament champion Cardinals added dominant 7-0 victories to their record, sweeping conference rival Darien and Trumbull to raise their record to a perfect 8-0.
Dating back to their championship 2025 season, the Cardinals have won 30 consecutive matches. Greenwich hosted Darien on April 21st and posted a 7-0 victory, winning each match in straight sets.
“Everyone is playing really well, you can tell by the scores, but it’s more than just the scores,” said Greenwich senior Shining Sun, who was successful at first singles versus Darien. “You can see everyone’s volleys are really strong, they’re attacking at the net and everyone is playing to their strengths really well.”

Sun was victorious in her No. 1 singles match against Scarlett O’Malley from Darien, 6-1, 6-0. Greenwich’s No. 1 singles player dictated the points the majority of her match, using her strong serve and stellar groundstrokes.
“I was feeling really good today in general,” Sun said. “My strokes felt really clean, I was hitting the ball well. There were a few times where I hit out, or hit in the net, but they were small adjustments that I could fix by getting to the ball earlier or focusing more on spinning the ball, so it worked out.”
At No. 2 singles, Caitlin Mahoney, also a senior, kept her perfect season going. Mahoney was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Emma Nichols at the No. 2 singles spot.

“I think I was working my opponent on chipping my opponent, moving her from side to side,” Mahoney said. “Also, hitting deep into the court, rather than giving them short balls on the line, then to come in.”
The Cardinals have won six of their eight matches by a score of 7-0. The other two matches they won decisively, 6-1.
“I feel like the momentum has been very positive,” Mahoney noted. “Darien is one of our toughest competitors, so I’m really happy with the way we’ve been keeping up the momentum.”

Avery Li gave Greenwich a 6-1, 6-1 victory at third singles over Giovanna Pistone, while Chloe Culver, continued her sparkling freshman season for the Cards at No. 4. Culver won in straight sets versus Olivia Chen, 6-1, 6-0.
In doubles action, senior Maddy Wilber and Sofia Rodriguez formed a winning combination again. Wilber and Rodriguez were in top form on their way to defeating Darien’s Sara Droogan and Sydney Johnson at first doubles, 6-0, 6-2.
At No. 2 doubles, seniors Bella Barban and Olivia Popp of GHS showed their experience in another match against a formidable foe.

Barban/Popp won their No. 2 doubles match against Darien’s Luli Escajadillo/Hannah Perkins, 6-2, 6-3. Third doubles saw Greenwich’s Clara Sibley and Priya Gupta earn a 6-0, 6-2 win, also in highly impressive fashion.
“The team we played is really good, especially watching them during warm-ups,” Mahoney said. “All the players on their team very competitive, so going into today, we were – positive mindset, keep our feet moving and cheer each other on.”

Sun has been impressed with the focus the team has exhibited each and every match.
“Everyone has been playing so well in every match,” she said. “No one starts slacking off, everyone keeps up their intensity, keeps their feet moving and keeps trying new things.”
Greenwich visited Trumbull on April 22nd in another FCIAC matchup and also posted a 7-0 victory. Sun won her match at the top singles spot, 6-1, 6-1.

Mahoney earned a 6-0, 6-0 triumph at second singles versus Trumbull’s Naime Estime, while Gupta got the start at third singles and was victorious against Erin Martini of the Eagles, 6-0, 6-2. Sibley also saw action in singles competition against Trumbull and won her match with Gemma Tomel 6-2, 6-2.
In doubles action, Wilber/Rodriguez were 6-0, 6-0 winners at No. 1 over Trumbull. Barban and Popp won in straight sets again at second doubles, 6-0, 6-1. In the No. 3 doubles matchup, Reece Raffe and Alexandra Rothstein of the Cardinals were 8-0 winners for Greenwich.

Greenwich is right back in action today (April 23) against visiting Stamford High School. The Cardinals (8-0) will then travel to Danbury on April 27th and visit Ridgefield on April 30th. They will also play on the road next week against Norwalk.
