Brunswick lacrosse team pulls out thrilling come-from-behind victory in final seconds on the road over Staples

As the national high school boys lacrosse rankings indicate, it’s been more than one month since the Brunswick School lacrosse team lost a game.

Since their loss to Loomis Chaffee School on April 4th, the Bruins have been on a tear, winning 10 consecutive games, one of which was a 9-8 comeback win over Staples High School in Westport on April 30th. After defeating Staples in exhilarating fashion, the Bruins rolled past Westminster School, 17-8, on May 2, extending their winning streak to 10 games in the process.

Heading into their home game against Avon Old Farms School today (May 6) the Bruins are ranked No. 1 in the USA Lacrosse High School Boys’ National Top 25 Rankings. Brunswick, which sports a sensational 13-2 record hosts Avon Old Farms at 3:45 p.m. today.

In its 9-8 triumph against Staples, one of the top teams in the FCIAC, senior midfielder Rick Giordano broke an 8-8 tie for Brunswick, scoring the game-winning goal with 40 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, after coach David Bruce called a timeout to set up the winning play.

Sophomore attack Hunter Hanford scored the equalizer for the Bruins, evening the score at 8-8 with a clutch goal in the fourth quarter.

Host Staples came out strong, taking a 5-1 first-quarter lead as a steady rain fell. Strong defensive play from senior captains Jake Greene and John Buttafuoco held the Wreckers’ attack at bay from there, allowing the Bruins to stage a comeback.

Goals from senior captain Lucas Garcia, sophomore midfielder Sawyer Bligh, sophomore attack Austin Tuttle and sophomore midfielder David Giuriceo ignited Brunswick’s rally in the second quarter.

Late in the second quarter, Bruins junior defender Timmy Hall forced a turnover that led to a fast break, with Tuttle scoring with just 0.7 seconds remaining, tying the score at 5-5 at halftime.

Brunswick’s defense rose to the occasion in a late man-down situation in the fourth quarter, which saw senior goalie William Connell make a key save to keep the game tied.

In their convincing win over Westminster School at Cosby Field on May 2, the Bruins seized a sizeable first quarter lead behind three goals from Garcia, along with tallies from Giordano and Tuttle.

Brunswick continued to build its lead in the second quarter, with Garcia adding two more goals and Hunter Hanford scoring twice. The hosts entered halftime with a 10-5 advantage.

In the second half, Garcia tallied his sixth goal of the day, Hanford completed his hat trick, and Giordano netted his second goal to give the Bruins control heading into the fourth quarter.
