Entering tonight’s game against host Wilton High School, Greenwich High School’s varsity boys lacrosse team had four matchups remaining in its regular season and were in prime position to qualify for both the FCIAC and CIAC Class LL tournaments.
With a record of 6-6 heading into their road game against FCIAC rival Wilton, the Cardinals could clinch a berth in the CIAC Class LL state tournament with a win over the Warriors and one of their three other remaining games. Greenwich is also in the running to make the ultra-competitive FCIAC Tournament.
Greenwich hosted Staples, one of the top teams in the FCIAC and state on May 2nd at Cardinal Stadium and put forth an excellent defensive effort in an 8-3 loss to the Wreckers in a game closer than the final score indicated. The Cardinals held a 1-0 lead on the Wreckers after the first quarter of play and didn’t allow a goal until Staples scored with 5:56 left in the second quarter.

“The defense was great,” Greenwich coach Bobby Lutz said following the team’s home game versus Staples. “Some of their goals were on man-down and transition, so man-down and transition is going to happen. But when you can shut a good team like that down in 6v6, it says a lot.”
Staples was ahead of the Cardinals, 3-1, at halftime, then took a 6-1 advantage into the fourth quarter, taking advantage of the possession edge they had on the hosts throughout the game.
Greenwich followed their defeat against Staples by rolling to a resounding 17-0 win over Westhill on May 5th in Stamford. Against the Wreckers, who played Brunswick School, the No. 1 team in the country, to a one-goal game in a recent 9-8 loss, the Cardinals received one goal apiece from sophomore Luke Wysocki, senior Boden Farmer and James Webster.

The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead on the Wreckers with a goal at the 9:27 mark of the opening quarter. They remained in front by a goal until senior attack Tristan Benton generated a goal off a dodge with 5:56 to go in the second quarter, evening the score at 1-1. Senior Charles Clark gave Staples the lead for good at 2-1 when he tallied at the 2:34 mark of the second period, as he charged hard to the goal.
The Wreckers’ third goal of the second quarter came in transition, as they took a two-goal edge into intermission. Cardinals senior goalie Jack Hamel was outstanding throughout this FCIAC match, keeping the hosts in the game with numerous saves off shots coming at him from all directions.
Hamel registered 15 saves for GHS, which was paced defensively by senior Teddy Johnson, Luke Golden and senior Alex Neitzell.

“The defense has been stellar all season,” Lutz noted. “I’m really proud of them and then Hamill is an all-star goalie. When you have a good defense and a good goalie, it’s really hard to score.”
Greenwich also played produced a representative effort in a home loss to nationally ranked Darien, a 10-5 defeat.
“The Darien game too, a lot of their goals were transition goals and that was the story today (against Staples),” said Lutz, who was pleased with his squad’s play, particularly in the opening half versus the Wreckers.

“It was a great first half,” Lutz said. “You come out with a game plan and you execute the game plan for as well as you can for a quarter or two and then things just naturally happen over the course of the game.”
Farmer and Webster each scored in the fourth quarter for the Cardinals. The Wreckers (9-3) received four goals from Clark and three from Benton in the victory.
Lutz discussed the Cardinals’ offense, which has displayed significant improvement over the course of the season.

“It’s hard with the amount of injuries and youth on offense, and they’re coming along,” he said. “It’s a bunch of young guys. There’s only one starter from last year – Boden Farmer on offense – so as the season goes on, we’re seeing improvement and getting better each game. We stayed with them (Staples)for a decent amount of time.”
Greenwich had to spend plenty of time playing defense against Staples.
“The possession time, I think was really lopsided,” Lutz noted. “I think they had the ball for 60, 70 percent of the time. If you don’t have the ball, you can’t score and we didn’t really test their goalie enough. It’s hard if you’re not taking shots to score.”

On May 5th, the Cardinals got scoring from plenty of sources in their 17-0 road triumph against Westhill High School. Junior Tyler Phillips led the way offensively, recording four goals and one assist for the Cards.
Farmer recorded a hat trick with one assist, while Zach Wysocki had two goals and one assist for the victors. Townsend (one goal, one assist), James Mickelson (one goal, one assist) Gustavo Del Poente (one goal), Evitt Straub (one goal), James Schelle (one goal), Jacari Hughes (one goal) and Johnson (one assist) also added to Greenwich’s offensive output.

Mack Critchell was 18 for 20 on faceoffs for Greenwich against Westhill.
Up next for the Cardinals is a road game against Fordham Prep on Saturday (May 9). Greenwich then hosts Cheshire on May 14 and visits New Canaan on May 19.
