It was Senior Night for Greenwich High School’s varsity lacrosse team on May 14th and the Cardinals’ seniors certainly stepped up on their special night.
Senior Sophia DiPietro scored a game-high five goals, her twin sister Giselle DiPietro registered one goal and four assists and senior Dillon McFerran tallied twice to power the Cardinals to an exciting 10-9 victory over non-conference opponent Daniel Hand at Cardinal Stadium.
The win marked Greenwich’s sixth win of the season and the team followed it up by defeating Ursuline School from New Rochelle, N.Y., at Cardinal Stadium, 14-8, on May 16th. The Cardinals recently lost on the road to Rye (N.Y.) High School and Conard High School. Greenwich has a record of 7-9 overall and is seeded fifth in FCIAC Tournament, which begins tomorrow (May 21). The Cards will visit fourth-seeded rival Ridgefield in the FCIAC Tournament quarterfinals tomorrow at 4:30 p.m.

In the Cardinals’ close Senior Night triumph versus Daniel Hand, the visitors took a 1-0 lead on a goal off an 8-meter shot with 10:24 left in the first quarter, but the hosts proceeded to score the next three goals to take a 3-1 advantage.
Senior Sophia DiPietro converted a free position shot, tying the score at 1-1 for GHS with 8:15 to go in the opening quarter. Junior Lily Nogaki scored the first of her two goals of the game shortly after Sophia DiPietro tallied. Nogaki scored from inside, putting the Cards on top, 2-1.
Another goal by Greenwich made it 3-1, then after Daniel Hand tallied, Nogaki scored again, this time shooting low and converting, making it 4-2 in favor of the Cardinals.
“It was a tight game, they’re a good team, it was going back-and-forth,” Greenwich second-season coach Makenna Warminsky said.

Hand rallied to tie the score at 4-4 going into the second quarter of action. McFerran then helped set the one of the second quarter for the Cards, scoring off a pass from Giselle DiPietro for a 5-4 edge. Another McFerran goal extended Greenwich’s advantage to 6-4 in the second quarter.
McFerran recently scored her 100th career goal as a member of Greenwich’s varsity lacrosse team.
“Overall, we did a really good job of moving the ball,” McFerran said. “Obviously, my teammates all contributed, which contributed to all of our success and it was good,” McFerran added regarding her 100th career goal.

Later on in the Cardinals’ Senior Night game, Sopia DiPietro scored the game-winning goal with 4:33 remaining in the fourth quarter, giving the home squad a 10-9 edge.
Juniors Charlotte Marek and Finley DeGennaro effectively rotated in goal for Greenwich in the Senior Night win. Senior Lindsay Messer, junior Georgia Salmon and junior Annabelle DeGennaro were among some of the athletes that paced Greenwich’s stellar defensive effort.
“That was so exciting,” Messer said after Greenwich’s Senior Night win. “This game represents this team that we are. We stepped it up in the second half, we made in-game adjustments and we played from the first whistle to the last whistle and I’m really proud of our team.”

Said Warminsky: “We were able to adjust in the second half to their offense. Our defense shut them down. Our offense played smart and overall, I’m proud of how they played today and we were able to come out with a win on Senior Night.”
With the score 10-9 in favor of the Cardinals, the home team was impressive in holding the ball in the final minutes of action to seal the victory.
“We were really composed and patient and we were moving the ball fast,” McFerran noted. “We all hustled. Overall, throughout it, we stayed positive and we worked hard.”

Should Greenwich defeat Ridgefield on the road tomorrow in the FCIAC Tournament quarterfinals, it will advanced to the semifinal-round on May 26 at Brien McMahon High School in Norwalk. The other FCIAC Girls Lacrosse Tournament matches include: top-seeded Darien versus No. 8 Fairfield Warde, second-seeded Wilton against seventh-seeded Fairfield Ludlowe and sixth-seeded Staple against third-seeded New Canaan.
