Playing in an ultra-competitive league like the FCIAC which features a wealth of outstanding squads, Greenwich High School’s varsity field hockey team has more than held its own against its powerful opponents, while displaying improvement each and every game.
“We’re growing a lot since the beginning of the season,” said Greenwich senior left midfielder Anna Boezen, one of the Cardinals’ captains. “I think we have a lot to learn and I think it’s going good so far. Every game is a better game than the other game.”
Already 11 games old, the season has gone well for Greenwich, especially considering the turnaround the roster underwent, since graduation claimed numerous athletes from last season’s successful squad. Greenwich’s 2025 varsity field hockey team advanced to the FCIAC Tournament semifinals and the CIAC Class LL State Tournament quarterfinals.
Senior center midfielder/captain Julia Van de Rotte discussed her role as one of the Cardinals’ captains and how the season has progressed for the team.

“It’s very exciting, especially this year with a lot of new players, because we lost a lot of seniors,” Van de Rotte said. “It’s a great opportunity to work on new things. I feel we’re trying new things every game and it’s a lot of adjustments, but it’s great.”
Heading into their 4 p.m. home game against Mamaroneck High School today (Oct. 14), Greenwich sports a solid record of 7-4 overall, including a 6-4 mark in the FCIAC. The Cardinals are in first place in the FCIAC West Division, while 9-0 Darien leads the FCIAC East Division, followed closely by Staples (9-1).
Greenwich opened its 2026 season with a tough 3-1 loss to Staples, then defeated Norwalk, 1-0 and Trumbull, 3-1. The Cardinals edged Conard on the road, 1-0 and posted victories against Fairfield Warde (6-2), Brien McMahon (4-0) and St. Joseph (5-0), capping a six-game winning streak. The Cardinals’ losses have come against Staples, Fairfield Ludlowe, Ridgefield and most recently, New Canaan. They’ve also been victorious against Stamford, a 2-0 win on Oct. 9th. The Cardinals produced an impressive performance in a tight 1-0 defeat versus New Canaan at Cardinal Stadium on Oct. 12th.
“We have a lot more to give and we showed that today with New Canaan,” said Greenwich senior defender/captain Addy Sciulla, who is helping the Cards at several positions on the field. “We literally gave it our everything and our new formations are finally clicking and I think it’s helping us to further our season.”

Head coach Megan Wax, who has guided the Cardinals’ varsity field hockey program a number of highly successful seasons, has been impressed with her team’s rapid improvement and their performance in an FCIAC league that has a great deal of parity.
“We have a lot of new members to varsity this year, as we graduated a really big senior class last year,” Wax said. “There’s been a lot of learning this year, both about the level of play in the FCIAC at the varsity level as well as team chemistry, dynamics, rotations, things like that.”
“So, the girls have been working really hard all season long,” Wax continued. “It’s been a big learning curve to match the elite level of FCIAC play this year in particular.”
Greenwich is in prime position to continue its trend of qualifying for the FCIAC and CIAC Class LL tournaments. As to what seed the Cardinals will get in the eight-team FCIAC Tournament, there’s a lot left that’s still to be decided, since there are a handful of regular season games remaining.

“The league in general has a lot of powerhouse teams, so it’s been fun to follow along and see how it’s all playing out and emerging as we get down to the last couple of regular season games,” Wax noted. “We have a bunch of games still that will be deciding factors and the same with a bunch of other schools this year. It’s been really fun, it’s a hard-working group and they’re motivated to advance each day.”
Boezen, Van de Rotte and senior left forward Delfina Rotella are among some of the athletes that have provided clutch goals throughout the season for the Cardinals (7-4). Junior Tatum Wunderlich has helped pace the Cardinals’ defense, which has exhibited toughness and fine play over the course of the season.
“Tatum has been a rock star in goal, really orchestrating the ‘D’ and helping them find their chemistry and understanding how to play off of each other really well,” Wax noted.

Sciulla, senior Lily Coyne, Maddie Johnson, a senior and Maddie Smith, are among some of the players, who have helped solidify Greenwich’s defense.
“We’re such a new team, everyone has been moving around,” Sciulla noted. “I myself play two positions and three positions, so it’s a lot to adjust to, but I think with every game we’ve gotten better at it. We’re learning our little quirks with each other. I’ve been having a lot of fun. We have a great group of girls and we love our coaches too.”
Van de Rotte has adjusted well to her new role so far this season.

“I’m a center midfielder, last year I played left forward, so it’s a little bit of a switch for me,” Van de Rotte noted. “But I love being defense, being forward, being in the middle of things, especially as a captain. I think being more of a leader in the middle I can control the field a little better with everyone around me.”
Against New Canaan at Cardinal Stadium, the Rams entered halftime with a 1-0 lead. Tulah Imbruce gave New Canaan a 1-0 lead when she scored with 8:09 remaining in the first quarter.
That was the game’s only goal, as both squads battled for possession of the ball and exhibited strong passing and stellar defense throughout.
Boezen, Van de Rotte and senior Sydney Coyne helped create opportunities offensively for the Cardinals, while the team’s defense and Wunderlich in goal kept the score 1-0.

Wunderlich registered eight saves, two of which came during a sequence late in the second half, with New Canaan’s Anna Hering and Abby Griffiths applying pressure close to the goal.
“This game was a really big step forward for us,” Van de Rotte said. “We tried a new lineup for a little bit and I think we’re taking big steps forward.”
Following their home game against Mamaroneck today (Oct. 14), the Cardinals visit Danbury tomorrow (Oct. 15), then host Wilton on Oct. 19th. Darien visits Cardinal Stadium on Oct. 22 and GHS closes out its regular season with a home game versus Westhill on Oct. 27th.
Then it’s playoff time for the Cardinals.

“Your eyes are always all the way down the line and want to make it to the championship games and as far as possible, but we really are focused on making significant jumps each day,” Wax said. “We want to keep progressing as a team and focusing on each opponent.”
“The entire team supports everyone at every position,” Boezen said. “We pass a lot to each other, we give a lot of passes to each other and we work together really well, which helps us score goals and win. “We’re going to play it game-by-game and see how it goes and keep working and getting stronger and better.”
