Following a glorious 2025 season in which it captured the CIAC Class LL state tournament championship, Greenwich High School’s varsity girls soccer team is producing what looks to be, another season to remember this fall.

The Cardinals have shown that they can’t be beat thus far, streaking to an eye-opening record of 11-0-1 12 games into their season, while looking like a team intent on adding another championship trophy to the school’s display case.

Greenwich has defeated most of its FCIAC rivals with one tie, earning numerous signature victories along the way. One victory that was especially special for the Cardinals came on Oct. 13th when Danbury visited Cardinal Stadium.

It was Senior Day for the Cardinals, who celebrated the special game in perfect style, recording a convincing 3-0 win over visiting Danbury. The win kept Greenwich’s season-long unbeaten streak going heading into its showdown against St. Joseph High School in Trumbull tomorrow (Oct. 16). The Cardinals and Cadets are tied for first place in the FCIAC with identical 11-0-1 records and 34 points in the conference standings.

“It’s one we’ve all been looking forward to all season,” Greenwich senior captain/defensive player Ashley Morris said after the Cardinals’ 3-0 triumph versus Danbury, as she spoke of the upcoming St. Joseph game. “We’re all excited for it and hopefully, we can go there and give a really good game to them.”

Greenwich’s road game against St. Joseph is a rematch of the 2025 FCIAC Tournament final that saw the Cadets edge the Cardinals for the championship. It marked the lone loss of the entire 2025 season for the Cardinals.

“We’ve got our biggest game on Friday against St. Joe’s at St. Joe’s,” Greenwich senior midfielder/captain Kenna Harlow said. “We have a tough end of our season, but we’re looking to get some wins, get some points on our board and we’re really excited for our end of the season.”

In the Cardinals’ 3-0 Senior Day victory against a strong, scrappy Danbury team, the victors received two goals from sophomore forward Siena Ettinger and one tally from freshman Zoe Pogemiller. The Cardinals and Hatters were scoreless heading into halftime, before GHS posting three second-half goals.

Cardinals senior defender Shay Sippel, one of the team’s captains, noted the hosts’ improved play in the second half against Danbury.

“The first half was hard for us,” Sippel said. “We weren’t getting into our rhythm; we were playing a bit slower. But we were able to pick it up  in the second half.”

Receiving the ball off a pass from Dionis, Ettinger, one of the Cards’ leading goal scorers, booted a high shot that hit the goal’s cross bar before settling into the back of the net, making it 1-0, early in the second half.

“It was a good time for a goal to come,” Ettinger said. “It was a great team play. Cam had a great cross and we all crashed the box and it ended up to me.”

In the 55th minute, Greenwich extended its advantage, courtesy of another goal by Ettinger, who converted a shot from close in. Dionis again assisted on the goal with 16:15 remaining in the second half.

“It was kind of the same thing, Cam had a great cross, great buildup for the team, it was a good goal,” Ettinger said of her second tally, which put GHS in front, 2-0.

With 6:35 left to play in the second half, senior Gabby Cimador set Pogemiller up for a goal, giving Greenwich a commanding 3-0 lead.

“As they also picked up their aggression, we were able to match it and also still keep our heads in the game and not make stupid mistakes out there, so that was good,” Sippel said of the Cardinals’ second half effort.

Sophomore goalie Taylor Tierney earned another shutout win for Greenwich, which has blanked seven opponents so far this fall. Tierney made a pair of stellar saves in the first half, one of which was off a shot from sophomore Julia Souza. Souza’s initial shot hit the post and after the ball bounced right back to her she knocked a shot toward the right corner of the goal, which was stopped by Tierney, keeping the game scoreless in the 30th minute of action.

Greenwich’s seniors that were honored on Senior Day included: Gabby Cimador, Chloe Gandler, Kenna Harlow, Ashley Morris, Caroline Ross, Emerson Shockley, Shay Sippel and Monchi Thompson.

“It’s always kind of bittersweet, because it’s an exciting day, but also sad for us,” Sippel said of the emotion of playing on Senior Day. “But I’m really glad we came up with a win. That was a nice way to end it.”

Prior to defeated Danbury, some of Greenwich’s recent victories came against Stamford on the road, 7-0, Staples in Westport, 2-1, Westhill (away, 3-0), Wilton (at home, 4-0) and Darien (away, 2-1).

Sippel explained how Greenwich has adjusted to its strategy so far this season.

“This season, we’ve done a great job, Ashley and I returning from last year and everyone else stepping in have done a great job,” Sippel said. “The hardest thing is adjusting to playing three in the back when we’re playing with three forwards and we’re all marking someone. But I think we did a good job of pulling people back when we need to, staying smart and not letting anything get through.”

Said Morris of Greenwich’s overall performance against Danbury.

“I’m proud of the way we pushed through,” Morris said. “They did a good job of sitting back and not letting us get many shots off. But we didn’t stop the way we were playing and eventually we were able to score three goals.”

Harlow discussed how well the Cardinals have played despite having a large turnover of players from last season’s championship squad due to graduation.

“Coming from last year it was definitely a hard transition,” Harlow said. “But I’m really happy with the way we came out. We’ve gained some great new players and we’ve just been building on the players we had last year. I’m really proud of our teamwork.”

“We all work together as a team,” Ettinger said. “We’re all connected, we’re all close and no one is playing for themselves, we’re all playing as a team. I think that’s the biggest aspect that makes our team the best is the culture and the type of team we have.”
