Excelling on offense, gathering numerous ground balls and playing sound defense, Greenwich Academy’s lacrosse team rolled to a convincing 11-1 road win over Hackley School in a game held on Tuesday.
Mimi Novak registered two goals and one assist, while Winnie Welch and Katie Barr each tallied twice for Greenwich Academy (4-1-1).
“We did a great job winning the loose ball battles against Hackley, coming up with 18 ground balls,” GA co-head coach Katie Johnson said. “Emily Greenhaw had a team-high four ground balls and was relentless on the re-defend. Winnie Welch also had the best game of her season, contributing all over the field with goals, loose ball pick-ups and interceptions as well as drawing a charge alongside teammate Brooke Bertrand.”
Ellie Burdick, Maddie Holden, Molly Moore and Amelia Lewis scored one goal apiece, while Dylan Casazza assisted on two goals. Goalie Rebecca Arpano made two saves and Ellie Johnson, who had to step in goal in the fourth quarter for Arpano, stopped one shot in the winning effort.
Bertand and Taylor Glanville each had one assist for the victors.
“Ten GA players have drawn charges this season so far, one of our big focuses is to maintain great positioning and patience in double team situations,” Johnson said. “The girls are doing a great job limiting fouls in the critical scoring area while still pushing the opponent to weak shooting angles.”
